The arbitrator shall also decide what is subject to arbitration. The arbitration will be administered by National Arbitration and Mediation (“NAM’) under its Comprehensive Dispute Resolution Rules and Procedures, which are available at www.namadr.com/downloads.cfm or at 1-800-358-2550 and explain how to initiate arbitration. You will be responsible for up to $125 CAD of the administration fees. Western Union may reduce this amount if you demonstrate hardship. Any arbitration shall take place on an individual basis; class actions or arbitrations are not permitted. If any part of this paragraph is deemed invalid, it shall not invalidate the other parts. 8 Low-Cost Ways To Transfer Money

In the technology-driven world we live in today, transferring money by cash, check, bank draft, or money order may seem like it's going the way of the dinosaur. While these traditional methods may appear less popular when there are faster electronic methods for transferring money between accounts, states, and even countries, that doesn't mean that the old ways are not still viable options. In addition, if cost is your primary concern, there are inexpensive ways of transferring money, and the cheapest method may vary depending upon your circumstances.

A bank teller can help you set up many other transfer services, including wire transfers to another bank, state, or country. If you're looking to transfer funds to an account at a different financial institution, you'll need the account number you'd like to send money to, and the bank's routing number. There are often fees associated with transferring money to a different financial institution.

Your Bank

A bank can assist with many types of transfers. If you're simply transferring money from one account to another within the same financial institution, this is something you can easily do at your bank for free. It can be done in person at a branch by withdrawing money from one account and making the deposit in another or by initiating the transfer online.

Key Takeaways

  • Traditional methods of sending money—such as through your bank—are still applicable today.
  • Overseas transfers through your bank are possible, but there are additional fees charged for sending the money.
  • New apps like Paypal and Zelle make it easy to send money to friends and family in a matter of minutes, with no fees.
  • Western Union and MoneyGram can be used to send money to a different city, state, or country for a fee.
  • Cash is another option for transferring money, as it is free to withdraw money from one bank and make a deposit at the bank where the recipient has a checking account.

Overseas money transfers are possible through your bank as well, though you will often require a lot more information, including the name and address of the account holder, information about the financial institution the money is being sent to, and the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT) or International Bank Account Number (IBAN) of the recipient bank. International wire transfers sent in American dollars will cost you around $45. Funds sent in foreign currencies will cost about $35. Rates change and may vary depending upon your bank.

Zelle

One of the newest players on the payment scene is Zelle, founded in 2017. The company is a United States-based digital payments network owned by the private financial services firm Early Warning Services. To access the service, users (with funds in a U.S. bank account) enroll their email and a U.S. mobile phone number with the Zelle app or through their bank's Zelle electronic portal.

Next, the person sending the money enters the preferred mail address and U.S. mobile number of the recipient, who must also have a bank account in the United States. After payment is sent, the recipient receives a notification with instructions for completing the payment. Zelle does not charge fees to send or receive money, but sometimes the bank or other financial institution charges customers for providing access to the service.

PayPal

PayPal can be an economical method for transferring money. It allows individuals and businesses to transfer funds electronically from one PayPal account to another. It's free to send money through PayPal, though the recipient is charged a fee to cash the payment. For transfers up to $3,000, the charge is 2.9%, plus $0.30 per transaction.

Fees decrease slightly for larger transactions, and there are no fees for sending to friends or family members, provided that money is coming from a bank account. International transaction fees tend to be about 1% higher and keep in mind that you'll be charged an exchange rate on transfers made in international funds.

Western Union or MoneyGram

Western Union and MoneyGram provide similar services that allow you to transfer money to a different city, state, or country. They charge a flat rate for the transfer that is based on the speed of the transfer, the location you're sending money to, and the amount of money being sent. If you're doing an overseas or international transfer, you'll also be charged an exchange rate. These money transfer services don't generally offer a very competitive exchange rate, which results in a hidden charge if you transfer money internationally. However, one of the major benefits of these services is that they tend to be both highly dependable and convenient.

As an example of fees, a $200 transfer through Western Union to a location within the United States or Canada will cost you around $12 for a rapid transfer and $8 for a next-day transfer. A transfer to the United Kingdom will cost around $22 if done through an agent of Western Union, and $15 if done online. Fees can change at any time.

New fintech startups that provide international money transfers are Transferwise (recently changed its name to Wise) and Payoneer—which serves over 150 countries.

Cash

Though this may be considered the "old-fashioned way" when it comes to transferring money, using cash can be extremely practical in some circumstances. For occasions where time is not the most important consideration, simply withdrawing cash and physically bringing it to another bank to deposit into an account is completely free! In most cases, the many cases the deposited money is available for withdrawal immediately. Keep in mind that sending cash through the mail is discouraged. If the mail gets lost, there is no way to retrieve the money.

Personal Checks

Writing a check and depositing it into another account, handing it to another individual, or sending it by mail to a recipient in a different city or state is another affordable choice—especially if your bank offers free checking.

Things get a bit trickier when sending checks internationally. Sending a check overseas that's written in American dollars will often result in delays in cashing the check so that the bank can verify the deposit, and some banks may not even accept foreign checks. The recipient of the check may also have to pay a fee for cashing it and cover the exchange rate to have the funds exchanged into the local currency. This method is safer than cash for sending by mail because you can cancel a check if it doesn't arrive at its destination.

Bank Drafts, Money Orders, and Cashier's Checks

When it comes to physical transfers that are being sent in foreign currencies, you can purchase bank drafts and money orders in the currency of the location you're sending money to. Inexpensive money orders can be purchased through many post office branches. These money orders will often be less expensive than those purchased through a financial institution, running anywhere between $3 and $9. Money orders purchased through a bank often cost about $10.

Money orders are typically used for smaller amounts than bank drafts. Because of this, the cost of purchasing a bank draft is often higher than for purchasing a money order. Though these forms of money transfer may take more time, they tend to be a more economical choice than services like wire transfers—and they are traceable in case they don't arrive at their destination.

Email Money Transfers

Some financial institutions, especially some of the larger Canadian banks, offer an email money transfer service. This form of money transfer functions like an electronic check. The funds are not physically transferred by email, though the transaction is initiated by email, and the recipient is notified by email that the funds are available. You don't need the recipient's bank account number, though a security question is generally required to identify the recipient before they can retrieve the funds.

Be cautious that you only accept email transfers from people that you know so that you're not falling victim to a phishing scam.

Transferring funds through email money transfer generally comes with a nominal cost of a couple of dollars, which makes it a cheap option if it's available to you. Receiving funds by this method is typically free. This service is also quite reliable and fast, generally only taking a few days to arrive in the recipient's account.

The Bottom Line

Shopping around and investigating your options will help you find the best deal for money transfers. Take your time and look for the latest fee information online. The cheapest method for transferring money in one circumstance might not be the same in another. Do your homework to make sure that you're not giving away your hard-earned money to big financial institutions or money transfer organizations.

Terms and Conditions

ລາວ

WESTERN UNION® MONEY TRANSFERSM SERVICE IS PROVIDED ON THE FOLLOWING TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Western Union® Money TransferSM transactions can be sent and picked up at most Western Union® Agent locations worldwide. Customers may call the number listed below for the address and hours of nearby locations. Some locations are open 24 hours.

Regular money transfers are usually available within minutes for pick up by the receiver, subject to the opening hours of the receiving Western Union Agent (“Agent”) location. The Next Day/2 Day and account-based money transfer services are available upon request to limited countries. The money sent using the Next Day/2 Day money transfer service will be available for collection within 24 and 48 hours respectively. Account-based transfers generally take up to 5 business days, though transfers to mobile wallets are often available within minutes. Exceeding amount limitations, regulatory restrictions or other restrictions in certain countries may delay the transaction. Western Union does not act as the agent or representative of any bank for any purpose and does not accept deposits on behalf of any bank.  Call the number below for details.

Money transfers will normally be paid in cash, but some Agents may pay by cheque or a combination of cash and cheque or may offer or the receiver may choose other ways to receive funds and some money transfers may be paid to accounts. All cash payments are subject to availability, receivers showing documentary evidence of their identity and providing all details about the money transfer required by Western Union, including sender’s and receiver’s names, country of origin, approximate sum, MTCN and any other conditions or requirements applicable at the Agent location.  The sender authorizes Western Union to honor the receiver’s choice of method to receive funds even if it differs from the sender’s. Cash money transfers shall be paid to the person that Agents deem entitled to receive the transaction after verification of identity often through examination of identification documents.  Such payment can be made even when the form filled out by the receiver contains minor errors. Neither Western Union nor its Agents carry out a comparison of the “To Send Money” form against the “To Receive Money” form to verify the address given for the receiver. In some destinations the receiver may be required to provide identification, a test question answer or both to receive funds in cash. Test questions are not an additional security feature and cannot be used to time or delay the payment of a transaction and are prohibited in certain countries.

Applicable law prohibits money transmitters from doing business with certain individuals and countries. Western Union is required to screen all transactions against lists of names provided by the governments of the countries in which we do business, including the US Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and the European Union. If a potential match is identified, Western Union researches the transaction to determine if the name matched is the individual on the relevant list. On occasion, customers are required to provide additional identification or information, delaying transactions. This is a legal requirement for all transactions processed by Western Union (inclusive of transfers that originate and terminate outside of the US).

TRANSFER FEES - Written information explaining how Western Union charges the sender for making a money transfer will either be displayed prominently at the Agent location or shown to the sender prior to completion of the payment order. Unless applicable law in the destination country requires otherwise, the sender will bear all fees for the money transfer. In certain cases, payment of a money transfer may be subject to local taxes and service charges.

FOREIGN EXCHANGE - Money transfer payments will normally be made in the currency of the destination country (in some countries payment is available only in U.S. dollars or other alternate currency). In addition to the transfer fee applicable to each transfer and if the currency which the sender presents to an Agent is not the currency to be received by the receiver, all currency is converted at Western Union’s then current rate of exchange. The currency will be converted at the time of transfer and the receiver will receive the foreign currency amount shown on the transaction form. In a few countries local regulations require the currency to be converted at the time the receiver is paid, in which case the exchange rate and any amounts shown on the transaction form may be subject to exchange rate fluctuations between the time of transfer and the time the receiver collects the funds. Western Union calculates its rate of exchange based on commercially available interbank rates plus a margin. Most rates of exchange are adjusted several times daily in line with the relevant closing rate of global financial markets. The exchange rate applied may be less favourable than some publicly reported commercial exchange rates used in transactions between banks and other financial institutions. Any difference between the currency exchange rate offered to customers and the currency exchange rate received by Western Union will be kept by Western Union (and, in some instances, its Agents) in addition to the transfer fees. Additional information about exchange rates for specific destination countries can be obtained by calling the number below or on our website at www.westernunion.com.

Sending and receiving in countries that provide payment in multiple currencies: Senders must select the currency of payment at the time the send money transaction is made. The transfer fee and the money Western Union (or its Agents, mobile phone or account provider) makes when it changes the funds into foreign currency may vary based upon the payment currency selected. In some countries it is possible to decide to receive the funds in a currency different from the one that the sender selected. Western Union (or its Agents, mobile phone or account provider) may make additional money when your funds are converted into the currency selected by the receiver.

SPECIAL SERVICES

TELEPHONE NOTIFICATION to the receiver that the money transfer is available for pick up is offered in most countries for an additional fee.

MESSENGER DELIVERY of a cheque or a bank draft is available in some countries to selected destinations for an additional fee.

SUPPLEMENTAL MESSAGES may be included for an additional fee with money transfers sent to most countries.

SMS – Where available, Western Union offers free SMS notification to indicate that the transaction has been collected by the receiver (for the sender) or that funds are available for collection (for the receiver). Charges applied by the service provider are the exclusive responsibility of the sender or receiver. If permitted by applicable law, the SMS will be sent to the sender’s and/or receiver’s mobile number they have provided. Western Union will send SMS messages to a third party gateway for delivery. Western Union is not responsible for undelivered SMS or technical malfunctions that occur outside of its proprietary systems.

ACCOUNT BASED TRANSFERS – Where available, the receiver may incur additional fees for receiving the sender’s funds through a mobile telephone or to a bank or other account. Transfers should be sent to a local (receiver) currency account, otherwise the receiving institution may convert the funds at its own exchange rate or reject the transaction. The receiver’s agreement with its mobile phone service, mWallet, bank or other account provider governs the account and determines their rights, liability, fees, funds availability and account limitations. In the event that the account number provided (including mobile phone numbers for mobile accounts) does not belong to the named receiver, the transfer will be credited to the account number provided by the sender. Western Union may make money from fees associated with use of an account. Western Union accepts no responsibility to the sender nor to any account holder for any fees, exchange rates used for conversion to non-local currency, acts or omissions of the destination or intermediary financial service providers.

REFUND - Western Union will refund the principal amount of a money transfer (at the applicable exchange rate described herein in effect at the time the refund is made) upon the written request of the sender if payment to the receiver is not made or credited within 45 days. Transfer fee refunds are made upon sender’s written request if the money transfer is not available to the receiver within the time specified for the selected service, subject to the business hours of, and availability of funds at, the location selected for payment and other conditions, including, without limitation, conditions beyond the control of Western Union or its Agents, such as inclement weather or telecommunications failure. Transfer fees are not refunded if the transfer is stopped at the sender’s request. Payment of some money transfers may be delayed as a result of the application of United States or other applicable laws. To the extent allowed by law, Western Union may deduct an administrative charge from money transfers that are not picked up within one year of the send date.

LIABILITY - WESTERN UNION DOES NOT GUARANTEE THE DELIVERY OR SUITABILITY OF ANY GOODS OR SERVICES PAID FOR BY MEANS OF A WESTERN UNION MONEY TRANSFER. THE SENDER’S TRANSACTION DATA IS CONFIDENTIAL TO HIM AND SHOULD NOT BE SHARED WITH ANY OTHER PERSON OTHER THAN HIS RECEIVER. THE SENDER IS CAUTIONED AGAINST SENDING MONEY TO ANY PERSON HE DOES NOT KNOW. IN NO EVENT SHALL WESTERN UNION OR ANY OF ITS AGENTS BE LIABLE IF THE SENDER COMMUNICATES TRANSACTIONAL DATA TO ANY PERSON OTHER THAN HIS RECEIVER. IN NO EVENT SHALL WESTERN UNION OR ANY OF ITS AGENTS BE LIABLE FOR DAMAGES FOR DELAY, NONPAYMENT OR UNDERPAYMENT OF THIS MONEY TRANSFER, OR NON-DELIVERY OF ANY SUPPLEMENTAL MESSAGE, WHETHER CAUSED BY NEGLIGENCE ON THE PART OF THEIR EMPLOYEES OR AGENTS OR OTHERWISE, BEYOND THE SUM EQUIVALENT TO US$500 (IN ADDITION TO REFUNDING THE PRINCIPAL AMOUNT OF THE MONEY TRANSFER AND THE TRANSFER FEE). IN NO EVENT WILL WESTERN UNION OR ITS AGENTS BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, SPECIAL, INCIDENTAL, OR CONSEQUENTIAL DAMAGES. THE FOREGOING DISCLAIMER SHALL NOT LIMIT WESTERN UNION’S OR AGENT’S LIABILITY FOR DAMAGES RESULTING FROM WESTERN UNION’S OR AGENT’S GROSS NEGLIGENCE OR INTENTIONAL MISCONDUCT IN THOSE JURISDICTIONS WHERE SUCH A LIMITATION OF LIABILITY IS VOID.

When an Agent accepts a cheque draft, credit or debit card or other non-cash form of payment, neither Western Union nor the Agent assumes any obligation to process or pay the money transfer if the form of payment is uncollectible, nor do they assume any liability for damages resulting from nonpayment of the money transfer by reason of such uncollectibility. Western Union reserves the right to change these terms and conditions or the offered service without notice. Western Union and its Agents may refuse to provide service to any person.

Notwithstanding the above, Western Union or its Agents will not reimburse the amount sent if it proves that the transfer is made in favor of a beneficiary that is not in the country of destination indicated in the form at the time of contracting the service.

Cheapest Way to Transfer Your Money Out of Japan

If you’ve been working in Japan for a while and following all the money-saving advice on this site, by now you’ve probably built up a pile of cash. While you could spend your stash on a gold-laced cocktail at the Mandarin Oriental, you might want to consider sending it home, or to a country that doesn’t have negative interest rates. So what are your options to send money from Japan?

tl;dr: Likely the cheapest and easiest method for transferring your yen out of Japan is Wise.

N.B. If you want to send money to Japan, see our article on transferring money to Japan.

Jump to:

Regular bank transfers from Japan: Costly, slow and complicated

Japan is renowned for its stable banking system, but that’s because the banks haven’t changed the way they do business in 20 years. A simple international transfer santander consumer usa auto finance legacy banks like SMBC, MUFG or Mizuho will typically involve you filling out an overly detailed form at the branch, getting charged up to 4,000 yen just for the transfer, and then getting shafted with horrible exchange rates. Unless you’re set on being a martyr to the Japanese banking system, our advice is to avoid this option.

Wise (formerly TransferWise): Economical, quick and easy

Wise have been around globally since 2011 (they recently changed their name from TransferWise to Wise). They allow you to transfer your funds to a local bank account before they get whisked overseas. The main benefit of Wise is they don’t make money on the exchange rate, and they try to make the whole procedure as fast, smooth and painless as possible.

The cost structure is this: You pay a fixed fee, plus a percentage of the total amount. What you pay depends on which currencies you’re using, but it’s very reasonable for most of the major ones. The exchange rates (when we checked) were almost identical to those on exchange rate reference site xe.com, which lists mid-market rates.

How to use Wise (TransferWise)

To transfer, you go to their site and put in the amount that you want to send (in either the source or target currency), then you enter your details. You’ll be asked to upload photos of either your “My Number” notification (that’s the plain piece of paper) or your My Number photo ID. If you have the photo ID, that’s all you need to upload; if not, you’ll need to upload a scan or pic of some other photo ID, such as a Japanese driver’s license or a foreign resident’s card.

Once you’ve uploaded your docs, you’ll get a confirmation screen with the details of your transaction. After you agree to this, you’ll get information of a local account at Mitsubishi Tokyo UFJ to transfer the total amount to. You can go ahead and make the transfer. (Note that if you’ve signed up for a new account, the transaction won’t go through until your documents have been checked off.) You can download the app for easy transactions going forward.

Note: Following the above steps should allow you to make a transfer of up to 100,000 JPY. However, in line with revised Japanese banking regulations, you will need to sign for the delivery of a letter with a special code, before you can send higher amounts, or make a second transfer.

How long does TransferWise take?

Wise (TransferWise) gives you an estimate of when the money will arrive in the destination bank account—approximately 2-4 days, usually. But with our test transfers, which included accounts in the UK, New Zealand and South Africa, the funds have arrived in just 1-2 days, and often on the same day.

How much does TransferWise cost?

The following was calculated using the transfer calculator on the Wise site on August 4, 2021. For the sake of comparison, we chose a transfer to USD.

*We deducted the fee from the starting amount for this and all calculations below.

JPY AmountFee (JPY)Rate (JPY->USD)USD AmountRank
10,0001810.00990.111
100,0007450.009910.811

Nice extras: TransferWise have added a borderless, multi-currency account to their services. It’s basically an international bank account, minus the fees, and it comes with a debit card. You can read more about the Wise multi-currency account here.

Not the place to go for the best exchange rates

GoRemit: Often the default option for expats

GoRemit is the crusty incumbent to TransferWise’s feisty challenger (GoRemit has been at this for more than 15 years—they were formerly GoLloyds). The process is basically the same, but the fee structure is slightly different. While the exchange rates are more or less the same, the handling fee is a flat 2,000 yen, and there may be an additional charge of at least 1,500 yen for any remittances done in Japanese yen. We haven’t deducted the extra 1,500 yen below—but keep it in mind.

GoRemit sign-up is a bit of a process—you can use the app to do it, but need to sign for key documents in the mail afterwards. Registering a beneficiary can take several weeks, and your transfer limit is pre-determined by GoRemit—it seems to be a case-by-case decision for each user. You might need to use a combination of the app and online banking to complete a remittance.

How much does GoRemit cost?

Seven Bank: Easy but expensive

Seven Bank offers a service in conjunction with Western Union. While you could just use Western Union without using Seven Bank, the integration with the bank account makes things a bit smoother. The fee you pay increases with the amount you send. You need to register for their International Money Transfer Service in advance—you can get the process started online, but all of the usual paper-based document checks (including My Number) apply.

Yep, they sell oden and offer banking services.

Western Union in Japan

The go-to for many people, Western Union is a reliable—if sometimes cumbersome—way of sending money from Japan. You can set up the transfer online or via their app, or do it in person at one of their branches—there are almost 90 listed for Tokyo. Western Union supports transfers to over 200 countries.

How much does Western Union in Japan cost?

For cash pick-ups, there is a base fee of 390 yen. These are what we simulated below, using bank-account-to-cash transfers. Note that bank-to-bank transfers may be fee-free, or cheaper. Also note that Japan-US transfers, as well as many other transfers, appear to be capped at 100,000 JPY if you are transferring from a bank account, or 1 million yen if you are paying in cash. One final note—cash-to-cash transfers appear to be faster, though pricier.

Alternative ways to send money from Japan

The options we’ve included here are not the only ways of sending money from Japan to another country—there are a number of alternatives. For transfers to certain countries, such as Bangladesh, Malaysia, Vietnam, Nepal or the Philippines, Japan Remit Finance (JRF), SBI Remit, Brastel or Japan Money Express might be more familiar names. It’s worth investigating a range of cash transfer services to determine which will give you the most competitive rates.

1000 yen note and cat

PayPal in Japan

Due to difficulties confirming transfer rates and fees, we have excluded PayPal from the ranking above. PayPal is by far the most opaque of the money-sending services; depending on the currency pair, there may be a conversion charge of between 0.5% and 4%. However, it’s not terrible for sending money from Japan to an account overseas.

A couple of points to consider are that while easy to use once it’s set up, getting money into your PayPal account from your bank can take a little while. Also, there may be restrictions on the receiving end. Depending on the country, the recipient may not be able to receive the cash you are sending. Apparently, measures like these are to stop money laundering and terrorism. As you may have noticed, both of these activities are flourishing, so I guess they got that one wrong.

Once you’ve set up on paypal, the curreny transfer itself is instant, however you need to consider the time it will take to deposit and withdraw or spend the paypal funds. This varies per each country’s banking regulations and whether you’re withdrawing to a card or bank account. For example even though the UK has the Faster Payments Service (which is effectively instant) paypal still typically takes 1 business day for bank account withdrawls.

International Forex and Share Brokerages

If you’re already speculating or investing in stocks and financial markets you might find your brokerage will support connecting bank accounts from more than one country and in multiple currencies. So this will allow you to send money from your Japanese account to the brokerage in yen, exchange to another currency and then transfer out to your bank account in the destination country. The forex exhcange rates on brokerage accounts can be very competitive and usually allow for more sophisticated transfers which can also help improve the rate you get (for example setting a stop and/or limit order to exchange only if a certain exchange rate is reached or held). However if you’re not already or at least intereted seting up with a suitable international brokerage, then this is probably too complex an option to consider. See our article on opening a brokerage account in Japan for more on this topic.

Our recommendations for sending money from Japan

Small to medium amounts

For small amounts and even amounts into the hundreds of thousands of yen, Wise (TransferWise) generally appears to be the best-value option (you can transfer up to 1 million yen in a single transaction, once your paperwork has been approved).

Western Union is also worth checking, despite the limitation on transfer amounts. For amounts over 200,000 yen, GoRemit might start to make more sense than TransferWise. PayPal is also relatively good for small amounts of money, even though the exchange rate is often fairly poor.

Larger amounts

For large transfers of yen outside Japan, GoRemit or, provided you are not a long-term resident of Japan, possibly OFX are generally the best options, as their usage charges do not vary.

Choice of currencies

Wise, Western Union and Seven Bank win out in terms of the number of currencies available. GoRemit is limited to 11 foreign currencies: USD, CAD, GBP, EUR, AUD, NZD, CHF, HKD, SGD, SEK and INR. Last we checked, PayPal could handle up to 23 currencies (with some conditions attached).

Ease of use

Wise (TransferWise) is probably the best when it comes to ease of set-up and use. Once set up, they are all relatively easy to use, though.
