Cards accepted: Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover

Square works with any US-issued and most internationally-issued magstripe or chip cards bearing a Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, JCB, or UnionPay logo. The following card types are accepted:

Credit
Corporate
Debit (processed like credit)
Prepaid
Rewards

The Square Point of Sale app processes all card types with the same standard rates.

Note: JCB is not supported with the contactless and chip card reader at this time.

Accept Prepaid Cards

Square can process prepaid cards bearing any of the logos above at our standard processing fees. Any remaining balance from prepaid cards will display on the receipt.

Note: When manually entering a prepaid card, check that your customer has registered the card with a billing address and zip/postal code, which can be done by contacting the card issuer. Information on how to register the card may also be available on the back of the card.

Accept International Cards

Square can process most internationally-issued cards bearing any of the logos above via manual entry, by swiping a card, dipping a chip discover credit card account number, or tapping a contactless card.

Please note: If your customer or a payment card isn’t present, you can manually enter your customers’ card information.
To manually process an international card, enter the card number, expiration date, CVV, and postal or ZIP code.

Keep the following in mind when processing international cards:

To switch between numbers and letters on your device:
- iOS: Tap ABC or 123 at the lower left of the screen
- Android: Tap the keyboard icon to the right of the payment card field
If you experience issues processing an internationally-issued card, have the cardholder contact their issuer.
Cardholders may be charged for currency conversion by their card issuer since payments must be processed in your country’s official currency.
You must be located in the country where you activated your Square account to process payments.

Square can also process payments discover credit card account number your international customers via Invoices or eCommerce solutions.

Square Invoices are a great way to bill your customers without having to worry about entering in your customer’s payment card information. However, this gives you less visibility into how your customer is paying, the following general best practices may help.
Online store payments accepted using Square’s eCommerce solutions may originate from international customers. However, it’s also important to take additional precautions on these types of orders to help prevent fraud and disputes.

Accept HSA and FSA Cards

Licensed health care providers and pharmacies can process Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) cards with Square.

If you are a healthcare provider and you selected the Medical Practitioner, Medical Services, or Dentistry business category during the signup process, you should have no trouble accepting HSA or FSA cards. If you believe your business category needs to be updated, contact us.

Note: Daycare centers and childcare services are unable to accept HSA and FSA cards through Square at this time.

Accept EDD Cards

Square can process Employment Development Department (EDD) Debit Cards at our standard processing rates. We currently don’t support Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards.

Accept Government and Military Cards

We cannot guarantee approval of government or military cards as approval is dependent on each card issuer.

How Credit Cards Work

Although phone companies, gas companies and department stores have their own numbering systems, ANSI Standard X4.13-1983 is the system used by most national credit-card systems.

Here are what some of the numbers stand for:

The first digit in your credit-card number signifies the system:

3 - travel/entertainment cards (such as American Express and Diners Club)
4 - Visa
5 - MasterCard
6 - Discover Card

The structure of the card number varies by system. For example, American Express card numbers start with 37; Carte Blanche and Diners Club with 38.

American Express - Digits three and four are type and currency, digits five through 11 are the account number, digits 12 through 14 are the card number within the account and digit 15 is a check digit.
Visa - Digits two through six are the bank number, digits seven through 12 or seven through 15 are the account green dot check balance online and digit 13 or 16 is a check digit.
MasterCard - Digits two and three, two through four, two through five or two through six are the bank number (depending on whether digit two is a 1, 2, 3 or other). The digits after the bank number up through digit 15 are the account number, and digit 16 is a check digit.

Credit Card Account Number Specifications

Although credit card account numbers may seem like a string of 15 to 19 digits with little or no rhyme or reason, they actually contain a great deal of best home remedy for cold and sore throat including the type of the card, name of issuer and even a hidden mathematical element to make it harder for people to make up a fake card number.

Anatomy of a Credit Card Number

Credit card numbers can have up to 19 digits, although most have 15 or 16. They contain four specific pieces of information--the type of card, the issuer of the card, the account number and a security checksum digit. Like the physical size of the card and the way in which its magnetic strip is encoded, the format of the card number is defined by a discover credit card account number from the International Standards Organization, or ISO, which ensures that every credit card number follows a predictable format.

Major Industry Identifier

The first digit of every credit card number is called the major industry identifier. Cards which begin with 4 and 5, like Visa and MasterCard, are typically issued by the banking or financial industries, while those starting with 6 are either banking or store cards. Cards which begin with a 3 are tied to travel and entertainment, such as American Express and Diner's Club. Finally, gasoline cards without a Visa or MasterCard logo would start with a 7.

Issuer Identifier

The first six digits, including the MII, make up the issuer identifier. These numbers not only identify the broad type of card, but also who is actually issuing the card. For instance, both American Express and Diner's Club cards begin with a three, but Amex cards start with 34 or 37, and Diner's Club cards start with 30, 36 or 38. Every Discover card, on the other hand, starts with 6011.

Account Numbers

Credit card issuers are free to set account numbers however they wish. While American Express cards embed a number of codes in the account number area, many other issuers just assign a number to each account. With a theoretical maximum of 12 digits in an account number, it is possible for each issuer to have 1 trillion different account numbers, although most use only eight or nine digits for the actual account number portion of the card number.

Security Features

The last digit of a credit card number is reserved for a checksum digit using the Luhn algorithm. The Luhn algorithm works on the basis of adding up every number on a card's face while doubling half of them and then adding one additional digit so that the final sum is an even multiple of 10. This checksum digit makes it challenging for someone to make up a card number at random since only one in 10 numbers will actually be a valid number.
