Cash App makes it easy for peer-to-peer money transactions, but said transactions can't come from just any payment method. At this time, for example, Cash App does not allow you to use a prepaid card to add funds to your account.

Instead, you need to use a bank account or a debit or credit card backed by either Visa, American Express, MasterCard, or Discover.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

After adding a bank account or debit card to the app, you can then add a credit card or another regular (non-prepaid) debit card to your Cash App account.

How to send, receive money using Cash App

You probably know Cash App, even if you’ve never heard of it before. Formerly called “Square Cash,” it’s been renamed and rebranded.

Owned by Square (which is helmed by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey), the app allows consumers to send and receive money, link to an existing bank account, or spend money directly from Cash App with a dedicated debit card.

Users can also set up direct deposits to their Cash App account.

What is Cash App?

Cash App is a peer-to-peer payment app that allows individuals to send and receive money to friends and family. They can also use the optional linked debit card to shop or hit an ATM.

Consumer Reports’s study of peer-to-peer payment apps gave it a 64 on a scale of one to 100 (with 100 being a perfect score). It earned good marks for data security, customer support and accessibility (across a range of devices and for those without bank accounts). But evaluators felt the app could do better on payment authentication and privacy.

Cash App is available for iPhone and Android users.

How does Cash App work?

Cash App is a peer-to-peer payment app, so you can use it to send, receive and request money. Instead of an account number, you’re known on the network by your email address or phone number. Or you can create a unique identifier known as a $Cashtag.

If you receive money, it lands in your Cash App account. Or you can link Cash App to an existing bank account and use that to transfer money to and from the Cash App account. You can also send money from a debit card and spend your Cash App balance directly from that. The app also allows users to receive direct deposits (like a paycheck), to their accounts.

Two caveats: You must be at least 18 to open an account. And U.S. users can make payments to U.S.-based recipients only, according to a company spokesperson. (UK residents can use Cash App to send and receive money within the UK.)

Does Cash App have a limit on how much I can transfer or receive?

Cash App has a transfer limit for how much you can send and how much you can receive. Users are allowed to send “up to $250 within any seven-day period and receive up to $1,000 within any 30-day period,” according to the website.

Once you’ve verified your account by giving information like your name, date of birth, etc., those limits are lifted, according to a Cash App representative.

Additionally, if you have a Cash App debit card, you can use ATMs to withdraw up to $250 at a time; $1,000 in a seven-day period, and $1,250 in 30-day period. And you can also get cash back at the register, if the merchant allows it.

How much does Cash App cost?

It’s free to send, receive and transfer money.

And while Cash App doesn’t charge ATM fees, you’re responsible for any fees levied by the ATM networks.

How quickly does the other party receive money sent through Cash App?

Money can be sent and received instantly through the app, according to the site.

Adding or depositing money to your Cash App account can take from one to three days, depending on your bank, the site reports.

You can also opt for Instant Deposits to your bank account, which are immediate, but come with a 1.5 percent fee, according to a company representative.

Direct deposits can take one to three days, depending on the sender’s bank, the representative explained.

Are Cash App transactions public?

No. And the Consumer Reports study found “they’re actually pretty transparent about data security and data privacy, just not as private as the top performers,” says Christina Tetreault, senior policy counsel for Consumer Reports.

If you send money to the wrong person or for the wrong amount using Cash App, that money could be gone permanently.

Is money in a Cash App account FDIC-insured?

Not at this time, according to a company representative.

What happens if I send the wrong amount or send it to the wrong person?

That money could be gone permanently. The Cash App site states that “payments are instant and usually can’t be canceled.” It directs users to “look at your activity feed to see if the payment receipt is displaying a cancel option.”

If not, the option it gives you is to use the app to ask the recipient to refund the money.

And while you can request help through the app or the company website, you can’t contact the company via phone or email, according to a representative for Cash App.

The Consumer Reports study did find that a large number of complaints about Cash App involved that aspect of the service, says Tetreault.

“There are a lot of great FAQ responses, but for folks looking for the personal touch, this could be not so easy,” she says.

And that problem isn’t unique to Cash App, she says.

With any service involving your money, “consumers should have multiple and plentiful ways to resolve issues,” Tetreault says.

Does Cash App offer its own cards?

Yes. Once you sign up for an account, you can request a free debit card.

Cash App doesn’t offer credit cards.

Is the money sent via Cash App protected against loss, fraud and theft?

The Cash App account and debit card would fall under the new prepaid card regulations, which took effect April 1, says Tetreault.

That means if you have unauthorized charges and report them within two days, your losses are limited to $50.

You can also temporarily disable the card if you’ve lost it, according to the company’s site.

But if you actually authorize sending money to someone (to the wrong person, in the wrong amount or to a recipient for merchandise that isn’t as promised), you’re not protected, says Tetreault.

Can Cash App users earn credit card rewards and loyalty points?

Cash App has a rewards program called “Boost.” It allows you to link Cash App deals to your Cash App debit card. (You can select just one deal at a time.)When you make a purchase, the discount is automatically deducted from the purchase price – like a coupon. You also have the option to earn rewards in the form of Bitcoin.

The card also gives $1 off for purchases at coffee shops.

Use these services – any peer-to-peer services – only with people you know and trust.

Do I need extra security while using Cash App?

Cash App allows you to add a PIN code or fingerprint ID to make payments. (The PIN will be the same as with your Cash App debit card, if you have one, according to the company site.)

Patrick Jackson, chief technology officer for online privacy firm Disconnect, gives them good marks for security and encryption. “They take an extra level of added security,” he says.

That said, since you’re dealing with your money, you want to make sure you’re also using optional security features and good computer practices.

If you can’t get to your private network, skip public Wi-Fi in favor of your phone’s digital network, says Jackson, whose company assisted with Consumer Reports’s in-depth study of peer-to-peer payment offerings.

Tetreault echoes the recommendation to enable all available security options in the app and on your device.

“We recommend turning on the security features so that there’s a layer of protection,” she says. Also smart: setting alerts for transactions.

Also, even though you’re still technically on social media, think like a banking customer when you evaluate, select and use peer-to-peer payment services, says Tetreault.

“People are confident with the [social media-based] system because they use it with people they know and trust,” she says. Adopt the same strategy if you’re sending money.

Says Tetreault, “Use these services – any peer-to-peer services – only with people you know and trust.”

8 Tools For Sending Money To Family And Friends Fast

Sending money to family and friends used to be limited to cash or check. But the rise of digital banking apps and services has made it easier than ever to send money to loved ones quickly.

With an abundance of digital payment options available, choosing the best way to send money can get a little tricky. While many money transfer tools are free to use, some charge fees. And some solutions take longer to process transfers than others.

Here are eight ways you can send money to family and friends fast.

1. Zelle

Fees: None

Transaction limits: $500 weekly, may be subject to bank limits

Transfer time: Within minutes

Zelle is a popular peer-to-peer payment tool for sending and receiving money via bank transfers. The company managed roughly $519 million worth of transactions during the first half of 2020 alone. Individuals can enroll to use Zelle through their bank‘s mobile app or by downloading the Zelle app. Either the sender or the person receiving money must have access to Zelle through their bank or credit union.

Zelle payments are processed quickly, with the money accessible within minutes in most cases. If you’re looking to get money to loved ones fast, it doesn’t get much faster than Zelle. Zelle makes the process simple for the receiver, too, sending them a notification that explains what they need to do to receive their payment.

2. Venmo

Fees: 3% fee when using a credit card; other payment methods are free

Transaction limits: $4,999.99 weekly for person-to-person transactions after identity confirmation

Transfer time: Instant

Digital wallets are becoming more common, and Venmo is one of the most recognized wallet apps. Available on iOS and Android, Venmo makes instant payments to family and friends a breeze. Unlike Zelle, Venmo isn’t tied to specific banks. Both parties need a Venmo account, which is easily set up using a mobile phone number or email address.

Users can either add funds to their Venmo account or link an external payment method like a bank account or credit card. Venmo also allows users to sync their phone and Facebook contacts.

Once set up, users pay by inputting the contact name, including a reason for the payment and setting the transfer amount. The money shows up in the recipient’s Venmo account almost instantly. Users also can request money from other individuals.

3. PayPal

Fees: None for U.S. transfers funded by PayPal balance or a linked bank account

Transaction limits: $10,000 to $60,000 limit per single transaction for verified accounts; limits may vary by currency

Transfer time: Typically instant, eChecks may take up to six days

Millions of shoppers worldwide use PayPal, but it’s also a great way to send money to family and friends when needed. PayPal accounts are free to create and easy to use. All you need to do is sign up and then link a bank account or payment card. You only need the receiver’s email address or phone number. Senders can either transfer money into their PayPal account or just send money directly from their linked account or card.

Only some transfers are free, though, so be sure to check before sending money. For example, U.S. transfers funded with a credit card, debit card or PayPal Credit will pay 2.9% of the funded total plus a $0.30 fixed fee. For international transfers, the transaction fee is 5% of the sent total ($0.99 min to $4.99 maximum) for transfers made by cash or a linked bank account; for credit, debit or PayPal Credit, add 2.9% of the funded total and a fixed fee based on the currency.

PayPal is accessible online or via the PayPal mobile app. The app, available on iOS and Android, tracks all of your transactions for easy account management.

4. Cash App

Fees: 3% when sent from a credit card, 1% or 1.5% for instant deposits

Transaction limits: $7,500 total in any seven-day period

Transfer time: Instant for Cash App to Cash App payments

Another simple way to send money to loved ones is through the Cash App. Created by Square, the Cash App allows users to create free accounts and quickly send money to other people.

Sending a payment through the Cash App is straightforward. Open up the app, enter the transfer amount and the receiver’s email address or phone number, add a reason for the payment and tap “Pay.” Sending funds requires a linked bank account or credit card. There are no fees for using its peer-to-peer service.

The Cash App limits how much money you can send to people. Senders are limited to $7,500 in total in any seven-day period. The app may require additional identification if you send more than $250, either in one transaction or multiple transactions, over a seven-day period.

5. Google Pay

Fees: None

Transaction limits: $10,000 per single transaction, $10,000 every seven days, $3,000 every 24 hours for Florida residents

Transfer time: Instant from Google Pay balance or debit card, five to 10 days from a bank account

Google is everywhere, it seems, so it makes sense that it would offer a way for individuals to send money quickly. Android Pay and Google Wallet now make up what is known as Google Pay. Google accounts are free to set up and are accessible through online access and its mobile app. You can use an existing Google account to set up Google Pay if you have one.

Google Pay uses a linked debit card or bank account for sending money. Sending money through Google Pay is only available in the U.S. and India currently.

6. Apple Pay

Fees: None

Transaction limits: $10,000 maximum over seven-day period, subject to bank limits

Transfer time: Instant for Apple Pay users

Apple Pay allows you to send money to family and friends inside Messages or using Siri on your iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. There is no extra app to download to access this service. Payments are instant. Unfortunately, Android users are out of luck, as are those with some older Apple devices.

You’ll need to link a debit card to Apple Pay to use the service. Users must be 18 years or older and U.S. citizens to send or receive money through Apple Pay. Green Dot Bank provides the services.

Money sent to other people goes to their Apple Cash account, where they can use it directly or transfer to a bank account or Visa debit card.

7. Facebook Messenger

Fees: None

Transaction limits: Subject to bank limits

Transfer time: Three to five business days

Not only is Facebook one of the most popular social media platforms in the world, but it’s also another way to send money to family and friends. You can send money to people easily through Facebook Messenger. Just start a message with whomever you want to send money. Click the plus sign and then the dollar sign, and enter the amount to send. Then, click “Pay” to send the money.

Facebook users can send money through the Messenger app or by logging in to their online accounts. Both parties need an active Facebook account and to have a debit card or PayPal account attached to their Facebook account. Facebook accepts Visa or Mastercard debit cards from a U.S. bank. You must also be at least 18 years old and live in the U.S.

8. Western Union

Fees: Fees based on multiple factors

Transaction limits: Limits based on various factors, including location, service and payment method

Transfer time: Instant with the mobile money transfer option

Western Union is the oldest company on this list—it’s been around since the 1800s. Most people don’t think of Western Union as a fintech company, but they’ve been helping people send money worldwide electronically since 1871.

Western Union offers multiple ways to send money to family and friends, including online, through its mobile app, in person at a Western Union office, over the phone and at select retail locations. There are options to use cash, a debit card or a credit card to send money, depending on how you send it. You can send money to a bank account, a mobile wallet or to a location for a cash pickup.

You must be 18 years or older to send or receive money through Western Union. Western Union’s transfer options are a viable option from a long-trusted company.

Other Ways to Send Money to Family and Friends

Mobile apps and online payment companies aren’t the only way to send money to your loved ones. Here are a few other options to consider:

  • Wire transfer. Most banks, credit unions and other financial institutions offer wire transfers. You may have to pay a fee to send or receive a wire transfer, depending on your bank.
  • Gift cards. Prepaid gift cards act as a debit card in many ways. Some gift cards have restrictions on where and how you can use them.
  • Cash. Cash is an excellent option, but it’s not the best form of payment to send by mail.
  • Check. You also can write a check and send it to family and friends by mail.

Tips for Sending Money to Family and Friends

Stay Safe

Safety and security are always concerns when dealing with money. Make sure any payment site you use is secure and that your bank and personal information is encrypted. Also, find out if the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) insures the money you send. If the payment app or site requires a password, make sure you use a strong password.

Know the People You Send Money

Payment apps usually offer options to make payments, but it’s best to limit your usage to sending or receiving money from people you know.

Keep Records

Keep track of any money you send to loved ones. Verify that they received the money and were able to access it. If you run into any issues, you’ll have the information on hand to deal with it properly.

Bottom Line

Sending money to loved ones is more convenient than ever before. In most cases, you can send money instantly for free. Ensure you are comfortable with whatever service you choose, once you’ve reviewed any fine print for fees or other important information.

How To Put Money on a Cash App Card

What To Know

  • You can add funds to your Cash App account at any time by going to My Cash > Add Cash > input the amount > Add.
  • Any balance on your Cash App account is available for use with a Cash App card.
  • You'll need a linked banking or credit card account to add cash to your Cash App to access with your Cash App card.

This article covers how to add funds to your Cash App card, including adding funds to your Cash App account on any mobile device and how to add funds without using a checking account or credit card.

How To Add Money to Your Cash App Card

You'll have to have a checking, savings, or credit card account to draw from to use this method for adding cash to your Cash App card. Some credit cards will not allow the transfer of funds to Cash App, although you can use them as a funding source to pay others using Cash App.

  1. To add funds to your Cash App account, open the app and go to the Banking tab, which is the icon that displays your Cash App balance on the bottom, far left. If you have no money available in Cash App, that icon will look like a house or a bank building.

  2. In Banking, tap Add Cash.

  3. On the Add Cash screen, type the amount you want to add to your account and then touch Add.

  4. If you have a connected bank account, the funds will automatically go into your account.

If you do not have a linked bank account, you'll be prompted to link one to finish the process. Select Continue on the prompt.

  5. From the list of available accounts, select your banking establishment.

  6. Enter the username and passwords for the account.

  7. You may be prompted to confirm your log-in; if so, follow the prompts to complete that confirmation.

  8. Once you've completed the linking, you'll receive a confirmation message that the accounts are linked.

At this point, the transfer of funds should complete. If it does not, go through steps 1 - 3 above to add cash to your Cash App card. Once the money transfers, you can immediately use your Cash App card to access those funds.

How the Cash App Card Works

A Cash App Card is a card issued by Cash App that allows you to access any funds available in your Cash App account. This card carries a Visa logo, so it's usable in any store that accepts Visa. The card draws from the funds in your Cash App account. That includes money paid to you by others and money that you add to your Cash App account.

If you don't have a Cash App card, you can request one in Cash App by tapping the card icon in the bottom toolbar. It may take several days for your Cash App card to arrive.

How To Add Cash to Cash App Without a Bank Account

It is possible to add cash to your Cash App card without a bank, but you'll have to do it through other people. You can give a friend who has Cash App a payment and ask them to send it to you through the app. When you receive it in the app, you can use your Cash App card to access it.

How To Make Purchases Online Without a Credit Card

To make online purchases, you must have a payment method that’s accepted over the Internet. This typically means a credit card, but there are ways to shop online even without a credit card. They include debit cards, prepaid cards, gift cards, PayPal, Amazon Cash, your checking account, or even borrowing someone else's card.

Use a Debit Card for Online Shopping

To shop online using your debit card, you'll need to input the 16-digit card number along with the expiration date, security code, and billing address.

The funds for the transaction will be deducted from the checking account linked to the debit card. If you don’t have a debit card, contact your bank about adding one to your existing checking account, or visit a local bank to open a new checking account and request a debit card.

Warning

One downside of making purchases with a debit card is the lack of security. When it comes to fraudulent activity, debit card users may be liable for those purchases.

Shop With Prepaid Cards

Prepaid cards are similar to debit cards, except funds are loaded into an account associated with the card rather than a checking account. Make sure the prepaid card has a major credit card network logo, such as Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express.

Prepaid cards are a great option for those who can’t—or don’t want to—get a checking account or credit card. You can apply for a prepaid card online or visit a retailer like CVS, Walgreens, or Walmart.

Pay With Gift Cards or Store Credit

Gift cards with a major credit card network, such as Visa or MasterCard, can be used at any online store that accepts payment from that network. You can also use a retail-specific gift card to shop online, but typically only on that retailer’s website. For example, a Macy’s gift card can only be used at Macy’s.

You can purchase gift cards in the same places as prepaid cards. Many of these locations also sell retailer-specific gift cards, but of course, you can also purchase these directly from the retailer.

Note

While you may be able to recover most of the funds stolen from a checking account if you report the fraud in a timely manner, gift cards don’t offer the same protections.

Store credit usually works similarly to gift cards. If you returned something to that retailer, they may have offered you store credit rather than a refund. Store credit may be given in the form of a physical or digital "card," or it may be pre-loaded into the customer's account.

Redeem Amazon Cash

Amazon Cash allows you to shop on Amazon.com without a credit or debit card. You just add cash to your Amazon Balance at participating locations. You can scan a unique barcode or use your mobile phone number to identify your account and add from $5 to $500 to use for shopping on Amazon.

Check Out With PayPal or Other Merchant Accounts

You can link a PayPal account to your checking account, and any purchases you make through PayPal will be deducted from that checking account.

If you have a PayPal balance, purchases will typically deduct from that balance first and then from your checking account. PayPal’s website has a list of online retailers that accept PayPal as a payment method.

Other companies that are similar to PayPal, such as Venmo, also offer options to make online purchases. Paying through Venmo provides buyers with some protection through their Venmo Purchase Program.

Important

Some online retailers now partner with third-party lenders so customers can "buy now, pay later." In these situations, customers can make purchases with a point-of-sale installment loan when completing online checkout.

Carry a Digital Wallet

A digital wallet is just what it sounds like: a way to virtually store your payment information. While PayPal and Venmo are two types of digital wallets, there are many others, including Apple Pay and Google Pay.

When using a digital wallet for online purchases, you'll have to use a device (such as a smartphone, tablet, or computer) that is equipped with your digital wallet. At checkout, participating retailers will give you the option to pay with your wallet.

Digital wallets use a technology called "tokenization," which creates a unique code each time you make a purchase. The retailer never sees your card number—and even if the code were stolen, a thief wouldn't be able to make purchases with it.

Buy With Cryptocurrencies

Some retailers—such as Microsoft and AT&T—are now accepting payment in cryptocurrencies. Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum are digital currencies that can be exchanged online for goods or services. In order to use cryptocurrencies for online purchases, you'll first have to set up a special digital wallet. Then, you'll be able to make cryptocurrency exchanges.

Not only can users make purchases without having a traditional bank account, but no personal information is required, which can be a security benefit. Many cryptocurrency users appreciate the feeling of having more autonomy over their purchases.

On the other hand, cryptocurrencies are still relatively new. That means they face high levels of volatility—and the lack of regulation may be concerning for some people.

Use Your Checking Account

Though it may be less common, some online retailers let you use your checking account and routing information to make purchases. Check the payment options for the retailer to confirm that you can use your checking information.

Checking account purchases are often made through EFT, or electronic funds transfer. EFTs digitally move money from one account to another. They are regulated by the Electronic Fund Transfer Act (EFTA), which is designed to protect consumers.

Warning

Always verify that you’re on a legitimate website. If hackers get access to your checking account, they can steal your money.

Borrow Someone Else’s Card

You may have a friend or relative who’s willing to let you use their credit or debit card for your online purchases as long as you pay them back. When you use this option, be sure to enter the correct billing address so the payment will process correctly.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How much shopping is done online?

According to the Census Bureau, e-commerce sales account for a little more than 13% of all sales.

What does "USD" mean when shopping online?

If you're shopping on an international site, you might see "USD" next to some prices to clarify that the prices are in U.S. dollars. If you're an American and you see USD, then the purchase will be just like any other you're used to making. If you see another symbol or abbreviation next to the price, then you may have to do a quick conversion to learn the price in USD.

Use Your Checking Account

Checking account purchases are often made through EFT, or electronic funds transfer. EFTs digitally move money from one account to another. They are regulated by the Electronic Fund Transfer Act (EFTA), which is designed to protect consumers.
