Star Wars BB-8 toy review (App-Enabled Droid by Sphero)

With the new Star Wars movie now showing around the world and hailed a great success, the stock salem five online banking sign in the ball-like BB-8 can only rise, if that's possible. The droid featured heavily in trailers before the film's release and its ingenious two-part design made it intriguing as well. Just how did that head stay on top? Amazingly it's not CGI trickery and even more amazingly you can buy a BB-8 droid of your own.

We were most pleased to see Sphero had been drafted in to create the toy version – giving us the Star Wars BB-8 App Enabled Droid. Sphero has created ball-shaped, app-controlled robots before of course, in the form of the Sphero itself. In fact BB-8 feels like a modified Sphero, with the addition of the head section that stays (largely) on top of sphero bb 8 battery not charging droid as it rolls around, if nothing else it's an impressive bit of engineering.

Sphero BB-8 droid head

Sphero’s BB-8 certainly looks the part, its tough polycarbonate shell has all the right markings and is a good colour match, though it's a bit shinier than the real thing. Of course it’s much smaller than the 'actual' droid, which is around ten times the height of Sphero’s 73mm version. It comes with a very cool-looking wireless charging dock, which runs via USB and fully charged can apparently last for 60 minutes of use, not that we ever played with it for that long.

BB-8 is controlled by a smartphone app, originally available for Android and iOS, there's now also a Windows app for the device as well, though your Windows 10 device will need a touchscreen, camera and Bluetooth in order to work properly. Using the app you can drive BB-8 around at speeds suitable for indoor play. There’s also a handful of buttons which make it do special moves, like little dances, or just wobbling on the spot and looking confused. It’s occasionally adorable, but not for very long.

The original Sphero had, and still has, a really good reason to exist. The idea was that developers could write their own apps for the robot via a simple API. It’ was also a great way to get kids into programming, via its SPRK program, as they can see sphero bb 8 battery not charging efforts played out in the real world rather than simply on a screen.

Without that angle, the BB-8 has a rather short lifespan. You drive it about a bit, build a little maze and drive it through it, get it stuck beneath the sofa and knock its head off a few times bouncing down steps, and then me and my kids were kind of stuck. It's cool and cute but it’s not fast enough to give you a thrill, it has no sensors in it, nor can it interact with anything, except by bumping into it.

And you’ll do quite a bit of bumping into things. Despite having used previous Spheros it’s still rather confusing about just which way the droid is about to head off, as it has no obvious front. You'll be driving it around fine but then it'll go past you, or you'll follow it around a corner and suddenly everything is off by 90 or 180 degrees. You can either try and adjust or stop and recalibrate where 'forward' is by spinning the droid around. If you're stood in one place driving it around a room it's fine, but if you want to chase it around the house it's a pain.

The only other key feature are the augmented reality messages, where using your phone you can record a short video message and then (again looking at BB-8 through your phone) watch it ‘project’ the message in a Star Wars style upon a nearby wall. It’s fun, but only once. Since launch Sphero has added additional messages you can project, these come from C-3PO and R2-D2 and include dialogue from the new film. Still it's a bit of a gimmick and not likely to hold you attention for long.

So I’ve given BB-8 three stars, it’s not a bad score, but it reflects this is an expensive device that will only please diehard fans and collectors. It simply doesn’t have enough longevity or play rabobank creditcard aanvragen (that I can find) to justify its price unless you factor in a very strong Star Wars bias.

This review sample was kindly provided by Firebox, which sells some much better stuff than this.

When I was kid, I had Star Wars toys—but they weren’t “smart” and most of them weren’t even battery powered. But kids these days have access to awesome toys like this remote controlled BB-8 (by Sphero) from the Star Wars VII movie. It looks pretty cool. Gizmodo has lots of details if you are looking for a review.

But how does it work?

How do you roll a ball from the inside?

First, let’s look at the bottom of BB-8. It’s a sphere that can roll. So, how do you make a sphere roll without pushing it? This one isn’t so difficult. All you need is a moveable mass inside the sphere. Maybe this mass is a tiny car with wheels (on the inside of the sphere) or maybe it’s a hamster. Either way, when the mass moves up the wall of the sphere a little bit, the center of mass for the whole sphere shifts.

Sketches Spring 2015 key

When the center of mass shifts away from being vertically over the contact point, there bank of america home improvement loan an external torque on the sphere. This torque then increases the angular momentum of the sphere and causes it to roll. Once the sphere starts rolling, the inside mass could just stay at the lowest point—except there is some external friction which will require the inside mass to continue to ride up the side and provide some torque.

But wait? Can you really make the ball roll from the inside? Wouldn’t that be like lifting yourself up by pulling on your belt? It might sort of seem that way, but it’s actually different. If you wanted to lift yourself up from your belt, there would be no external force on you except for the gravitational force pulling you down. When the inside mass moves up the wall, there is an external force to accelerate the sphere horizontally—friction. Here is a more detailed image showing all the forces on the sphere when the mass moves up the wall.

Sketches Spring 2015 key

But why is there a frictional force? Well, there are two possibilities. First, if there is no friction (smooth surfaces) then this torque from the gravitational force will cause the sphere to rotate—and rotate it will, but in place. If there is friction, then this frictional force will push the sphere forward and make it roll. I assume the Great northwest federal credit union hours toy has enough friction to get it moving.

What about the head?

All I know for sure is that the head uses a magnet to stay on. My guess is that there is some type of magnet inside the sphere to attract a magnet inside of the head. The head then has rollers so that it can roll along the top of the sphere. Of course the inside magnet would have to be movable so that you could make BB-8 do fun head moves.

But is that the only way to make it work? No, of course not. Check out these cool instructions for building a different kind of BB-8. This other version has the motor only in the head and sits on top of a plain ball. By moving the head, you can also exert a torque on the ball to make it move. It’s an interesting idea (even if the head for this version is huge).

What about inductive charging?

Since the bottom of BB-8 is a sphere, it would be rather awkward to have a charging port or a door for batteries. Instead, the sphere is completely sealed. In order to charge this battery, you place it on a base. The base essentially has a coil of wire with an oscillating electric current. This changing current can then induce a current in another coil inside the sphere. The induced current then charges the air fryer oven walmart. Yes, that is a very simplified explanation. If you want more detail, check out this post on wireless charging.

Like I said, this is a cool toy. I’m sure you could use it for many different physics experiments.

SPHERO BB-8 - UNBOXING AND CHARGING

It's incredible, right? He's much, much smaller, of course, standing at around 17cm tall. Given its diminutive size, we're surprised at just how perfect it looks. R2-D2 will also react to your presence if you're nearby, as well as to other Sphero droids in range. With Sphero's R2-D2, you'll be able to recreate some of the droid's most iconic lines from the epic film saga.

Who can forget, "Beep boop boop beep boop boop"? Ah, memories. Sphero tapped into the Lucasfilm and Disney archives and their R2-D2 uses the very same sound effects from the films. And unlike the BB-8 from a couple years back, the speaker is built right into R2-D2, so the sounds emanate from the actual droid — not your smartphone app. Thanks to augmented reality tech, you can use the companion app to explore a kind of wireframed, Matrix -style version of the Millennium Falcon, with R2-D2 responding to your movements.

As you move around its corridors, you get little tidbits of information about sights like the AG-2G Quad Laser Cannon. R2-D2 comes packed with four motors within — two for the dome, and one in each main leg — which allow realistic movement and independent head and body control. With the app, you can control R2-D2 much like a character in a video game, spinning his head while sending him scooting across your lounge.

Well, you'll have a willing and eager companion in R2-D2. Like BB-8 before him, Sphero's latest droid can recognize when you're watching select Star Wars films and react accordingly to big scenes with movements and sound.

Sphero's new droid should last a bit longer than BB-8 too: the company estimates that it will last one full hour on a single charge, which should be just enough time to have your fill of fun before finding some other distraction.

Unlike BB-8, however, R2-D2 won't have a bespoke charging station to sit on — but that might actually be a good thing. While he'll lack a throne to rest in, the ability to just plug in a microUSB cable means you'll be able to charge him anywhere. Is this the droid you're looking for? That's mere hours away! But to bring a working, talking R2-D2 into your life? Well, we're honestly tempted. Look out for our hands-on review very soon.Max holds a B. Looking for a radio-controlled car?Sphero, the company that helped bring the scene-stealing BB-8 to life in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and then delivered a tiny, but lively BB-8 robot toy, is breaking the traditional Sphero ball mold with a pitch-perfect scale R2-D2 toy robot.

It is the first R2-D2 toy and there have been many, including my favorite: the 1-foot-tall, voice-controlled R2-D2 by Hasbro to automatically go from three legs, to two legs and back to three. Yes, Sphero does the whole thing, including falling over.

Sphero tells me the toy is designed to take the hit. The company also introduced BB-9E, a brand-new character that will appear in the upcoming Star Wars film. First, the colors are all black and gray this a Dark Side droid. In fact, it only attaches to the BB-9E base via magnets and draws power from the main ball via induction technology. Inside the head are the lights, a coil, and a capacitor. Beyond that, the BB-9E will work very much like the original BB-8; rolling around the floor letting you steer it via the app or program in new routes you draw them on a grid with your finger.

In addition to the standard charging base, BB-9E ships with a cool new platform called the Droid Trainer. It looks like a platform for the droid but slides apart to reveal a scooped-out base. Once you place BB-9E on it, you run one of the augmented reality routines in the app and BB-9E will run in place while you watch its avatar tour an Empire or would it be First Order? Unlike other Sphero droids, this one does not have a charging base.

Most of these canned animations are triggered via the app.

SPRK+ not Holding a Charge

I could easily switch back and forth between controlling any of the three. As in previous versions, the App provides a running Star Wars soundtrack to accompany your droid activities. Once connected, I rotated an onscreen R2-D2 until the real robot toy was facing away from me. This is an important step to ensure that the droid will go in the direction you expect it to. After that, I could use the redesigned drive screen to control the robot. As soon as I started driving, the third foot popped out, R2, leaned back and was ready to go.

This action looks exactly as it does in all seven of the Star Wars films. As for the evil and somewhat inscrutable BB-9E, its animations are very similar to BB-8, but the look and audio are darker. The body art is also sharper and shinier than the original BB-8 body. When it charges, you can see a glowing purple core.

Connection Troubleshooting

On the app, the music changed to darker sounding March of the Resistance from the Force Awakens. Before I could drive BB-9E, I had to make sure that a bright blue light emanating from inside the drone was facing me. Then I was good to go. I placed BB-9E in the trainer and launched the Supremacy experience, which took me aboard what looked like an Imperial Cruiser. As I moved my phone to look around and drove forward via the on-screen joystick, BB-9E rolled in the trainer base.

This is kind of cool, but the sound of the ball bot rolling in that base is too loud and, to be honest, a little distracting. Maybe others will like it more. The radios inside each bot act as proximity sensors and trigger a reaction in the robots. We're using cookies to improve your experience.Sphero no longer produces or sells R2-D2 droids. There is also a cover on the inner surface of the leg that pops off to reveal a long plastic lever arm between the pivoting mechanism in the shoulder and the foot. This lever arm keeps the foot in contact with the ground when the leg pivots to let R2 start moving around. R2 has a servomotor in the base of each leg. The servomotor connects to the track drive through a gear train that reduces the motor speed and boosts the torque.

The servomotor and the geartrain become visible by removing a small cover in the foot of the arm. Armless R2 minus one body panel. To remove the dome, we had to unstick snap-fits in the dome rotator with a Dremel tool. Removing three screws reveals the white plastic rotation mechanism, bottom, housing the dome servomotor and feedback potentiometer not visible. The cover for the cylindrical part of the body is in two pieces. One piece is held on with a couple screws and comes off pretty easily.

The dome covering comes off by rotating the head to get at two snap fits. The snap fits are rather tough to manipulate. Once the dome is off, the other cylindrical side panel comes off to reveal, among other things, the speaker and Lithium-ion battery underneath it.

With the speaker removed, the gray plastic housing that holds the foot and its control lever is revealed. It is fastened on with screws. Removing it reveals the servomotor that rotates the turret and a feedback encoder. The feedback encoder is interesting in that rather than being an incremental encoder, it is just a potentiometer. The motor controller senses the changing potentiometer resistance to decide how to rotate the motor shaft to rotate the turret. The servomotor that moves the foot is the same one that angles the two arms into position to let the robot move around.

The chassis consists of two pieces fastened together with screws. It sits on a lever arm that moves via cam action when the servomotor rotates the arms into position to let R2 move around. Now we move on to the electronics that control all the movement and sound effects. Two main boards hold most of the electronics with three other smaller boards on the turret and main chassis that hold LED indicators.

Near it sit two motor driver chips from Texas Instruments. Each driver chip can control two motors and can implement motor speed control through pulse-width modulation. That makes sense because there are four motors on R2. So the STM processor runs the feedback calculations for all four feedback loops. The other main board on R2 contains an audio amp chip to run the speaker and generate the sounds that give R2 a lot of his personality. To create this article, volunteer authors worked to edit and improve it over time.

To completely remove the cog shield out of the way, carefully remove the black pin connectors from the slot in the shield. Once you have removed the cog out of the way, you can then pinch the clip to access the battery. To remove the battery, simply pull on it with slight force as it is held tight by adhesives.

When the center of mass shifts away from being vertically over the contact point, there is an external torque on the sphere.

I assume the BB-8 toy has enough friction to get it moving.

The induced current then charges the battery. Yes, that is a very simplified explanation. If you want more detail, check out this post on wireless charging.

Like I said, this is a cool toy. I’m sure you could use it for many different physics experiments.

Star Wars BB-8 toy review (App-Enabled Droid by Sphero)

With the new Star Wars movie now showing around the world and hailed a great success, the stock of the ball-like BB-8 can only rise, if that's possible.

In fact BB-8 feels like a modified Sphero, with the addition of the head section that stays (largely) on top of the droid as it rolls around, if nothing else it's an impressive bit of engineering.

It’ was also a great way to get kids into programming, via its SPRK program, as they can see their efforts played out in the real world rather than simply on a screen.

It simply doesn’t have enough longevity or play value (that I can find) to justify its price unless you factor in a very strong Star Wars bias.

This review sample was kindly provided by Firebox, which sells some much better stuff than this.
