Twitter can be used for both personal and business use. In this article, we will create a Twitter Business Page for your business and show you how to publish your messages. Fact: Twitter has over 500 million registered users.

Step 1 – Twitter Business Page Sign Up Process

To start the signup process you will need to visit the following link in your web browser:

Complete the basic registration form by entering your:

  • Full Name < Enter your company name
  • Email
  • Password

On the next screen, Twitter will check if the information you have entered invalid. Make sure you change the username to your company name. In this example article, I will create an account for the following website: https://www.banner-ad-designers.com

  • Twitter will only allow a maximum of 15 characters for your User Name

  • Your user name cannot contain spaces

Select the “Create my account” button once all fields are completed.

On the following screen select the “Next” button

On the next screen, Twitter will request for you to follow 5 Twitter Users.

  • What is Follow? On Twitter, you can build an audience for your Twitter Page by following other Twitter users. In some cases, if you follow someone Twitter Page they will follow you back.

To start off we will follow 5 well-known organisations that use Twitter. In the search box Enter the following text “BBC”. Twitter will search for a user with this user name and you should see a list as shown in the image below. Click the follow button for the 1st entry on the list as shown in the image below.

Use the search box and repeat the above process for 4 other organisations so you will have a total of 5 users which you are following.

Select the “Next” button once you have followed 5 other Twitter Users.

In the next step twitter will request for your to follow 5 well known people as shown in image below.

Enter “Stephen Fry” into the search box and select the “Follow” button.

Use the search box and repeat the above process for 4 other people so you will have a total of 5 people which you are following.

Select the “Next” button once you have followed 5 people

On the next step, Twitter will ask you to Add our contacts using your email services such as Gmail or Yahoo. We will skip this task and I will show you how you can do this later in this article.

Select the “Skip” link located in the bottom left as shown in the image below. I have highlighted the “Skip” link in red.

In the next step, we will need to upload a Profile Image. This can be your company logo. The image uploaded should be 81 x 81 pixels. You will also need to enter a description of your business. I will use the following profile image and description.

  • Your description can contain no more than 160 characters.

Add your profile image and description as shown in the image below and then select the “Done” button.

In the next step, you will need to confirm your email address.

Open the inbox for your email account which you used in the registration process and select the confirmation link as shown in the image below. This will take you back to the Twitter website with a message confirming your email has been confirmed.

Step 2 – Complete Your Twitter Business Page Profile

You need to login to your Twitter Business Page to complete the following steps.

Click on the COG icon and then select the “Edit Profile” option

On the profile editor screen enter a “Location” and your business “Website” as shown in the image below. Select the “Save changes” button.

In the next step, we will add a header image.

  • The header image size needs to be 1252 x 626 pixels.

The below is the header image I created using GIMP image editing software which is free to download here: https://www.gimp.org

Click on the COG icon and then select the “Edit Profile” option to add your new header image.

Inthe profile, options select the “Change header” button and upload your new header image.

Step 3 – Posting Messages (Tweet) On Your Twitter Business Page

 

You need to login to your Twitter Business Page to complete the following steps.

Click the blue icon located in the top right of your Twitter business page as shown in the image below.

In this example, I will add the following message (Tweet) which will also contain a link to the Banner Ad Designers website.

Example Message: Do you need a professional web banner ad design for your business marketing campaign? – Click here to view more info: https://www.banner-ad-designers.com

    • Any message you add needs to be 140 characters or less which also includes the link.

Click the Tweet button once you have entered your message.

Below is an example of what the message will look like when added to the Twitter page.

In this next example, we will Tweet a YouTube video. The process is very similar to the above example. First, you need to find a video on YouTube which you would like to share on your Business Twitter Page. In this example I will be sharing the video located on this YouTube Page:

Select the “Share” option on the relevant YouTube video page. I have highlighted this option in Red below.

Navigate back to your Twitter Business Page and Click the blue Icon located in the top right of your Twitter business page as shown in the image below.

Create a message which also includes the YouTube video URL link.

Example message I will use: Check out these great tips for Adobe Illustrator: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKTwASR4dGg

Enter your message into the message box as shown in the image below and then click the “Tweet” button.

You need to fresh your Twitter Business Page for the video to display correctly. Click the Refresh button on your web browsers. I have listed where the refresh button is located in different web browsers below.

After refreshing the page you will see a “View media” button as shown in the image below.

Your selected YouTube video will display directly in the Twitter Timeline when you are or your Twitter business Page visitors click on the “View Media” button as shown below.

In this last example, we will Tweet an image that can be viewed directly on your Twitter timeline.

To complete this task you will need a suitable image to share. In this example, I will share the following image. These are example banners created by Banner Ad Designers.

I will also create a message to go with the image below as follows.

To add the message and image to the Twitter timeline you will need to first click the blue Icon located in the top right of your Twitter business page as shown in the image below.

Enter your message into the message box and then select the “Camera” icon as shown in the image below.

A new window will appear and you will need to select the image on your computer which you want to add to your Twitter message. Select the image and click the “Open” button as shown in the image below.

Your selected image will be displayed below the Tweet message as shown in the example below. Simply select the “Tweet” button to add a message and image to your Business Twitter timeline. Note this may take a few seconds to complete as you are uploading an image.

Now you will be able to see your message and a “View Photo” button as shown in the example below.

Select the “View Photo” button, your tweet will expand and show the image you have added to your tweet as shown in the example below.

Step 4 – Add a background image and update the link colour

 

You need to login to your Twitter Business Page to complete the following steps.

In this step I will use the following image as a background for Banner Ad Designers Twitter Business Page. The background image uploaded should be 2500 x 1600 pixels.

Click on the “COG” icon as shown in the image below and select the “Edit Profile” option.

Select the “Design” option from the left side menu.

Select the “Change Background” button and then the “Choose existing image” option.

A “File Upload” window will appear. Navigate to the background image you want to use on your Twitter page and then click the “Open” button.

Select the “Center” option for the background-position.

Select a Link colour. You do this by clicking on the colour swatch. Note you do not need to choose a background colour as you are using an image for the background. In this example, I will select red for the link colour.

Select the type of overlay, in this example, I have used a black overlay.

But one magazine a month wasn't enough gaming coverage for my tastes, so I regularly supplemented it with the likes of GamePro, EGM2, PC Gamer, Diehard Gamefan, maybe even a Video Games and Computer Entertainment here and there. By the mid-'90s, I had added Next Generation (the US counterpart to Edge) as I very much appreciated its presentation and attempts to offer an elevated approach to the medium.

A personal favorite

In short, I read a ton of gaming magazines. I read them cover-to-cover until the covers fell off. From the art to the layouts to the tone of the writing, they were just fun. I was excited about games, and they both validated and amplified that excitement. They largely set my priorities in assessing games as a kid.

For example, I quickly learned that it's about gameplay above all else. But having said that, cutting edge graphics are cool and new, more powerful technology will not only always make older games look terrible and obsolete, it will allow us to explore heretofore unimagined emotions, perhaps even to one day... cry? Because that's the goal of real art and games are definitely real art that everyone should take super seriously, but also people who worry that they could possibly affect players in any way beyond improving hand-eye coordination are undeniable fools who just don't get it.

In a lot of ways, I learned to write about games by digesting those magazines and internalizing their styles and priorities. I eventually even wrote for one in 2003 and 2004: the short-lived and barely remembered Polygon Magazine (no relation to the current website Polygon), which marketed itself as a high-brow magazine for "intelligent gaming."

1. Use Twitter Lists

We have a confession to make: we absolutely love Twitter lists. Not a day goes by that we do not use them and add new people to them. Matter of fact, we believe Twitter lists might be the most powerful features Twitter offers. Unfortunately far too many businesses aren’t using them enough or at all. Twitter lists allow you to organize users into easier to digest newsfeeds. The best part is you do not even have to be following a person to add them to a list. Some lists that your business should create immediately are:

  • Competitors
  • Customers
  • New Leads
  • Industry Influencers
  • Industry News

Tip: If you do not have time to create lists of your own, consider following lists other users have created. Check out the lists created by some of your favorite tweeters and quickly get access to a whole new feed of content and potential leads.

2. Include Images In Tweets

Twitter released a study that showed tweets including an image receive more engagement than tweets that do not. Statistically speaking, adding an image to your tweets increases engagement by 35%. As a business your eyes should be lighting up. If you want to see an even more significant boost in engagement, consider using a tool to create custom images that will stand out even more. Some tools to consider are:

3. Give Credit When Credit Is Due

If you are sharing content created or first shared by someone else, give them credit by including their @name in your tweet (as shown above). Start doing this and you will be surprised how many of the people you credit will follow you and/or share your post with their audience. 4. Monitor Your Company Name (without ‘@’)

When someone includes @eclincher in their tweet we get notified that someone mentioned us and can easily respond back, retweet, etc. Most businesses do a great job of monitoring this type of mention, as Twitter makes it very easy.

However, what happens when someone mentions “eClincher” without the “@” symbol? That is where it get tricky. Twitter does not send a notification unless they include “@” which leads to many businesses missing a good percentage of total mentions. Luckily you can track mentions of your company’s name by typing it into the search section of Twitter or with eClincher’s custom feeds.

5. Fill Out Your Profile Completely

  • Profile and Header Pictures
  • Short Bio
  • URL of Your Website
  • Location

The header picture is a great place to show off your product/service, as well as to promote events, your other social accounts, promotions and/or hashtags. As time goes by, make sure you continue to tweak your bio and update your pictures to positively reflect your business.

6. Listen With Your Eyes

Social media is full of valuable information, as long as you know where to look and what you are looking for. Smart businesses are now monitoring social media to help improve their product/service, stay ahead of new trends and keep an eye on competitors. Create a list of 5 to 10 keywords you want to monitor and keep an eye on them daily. Answer questions, join conversations and learn from what you see.

7. Provide Value To Followers

Your goal with every tweet you send should be to add value to your followers’ timelines. When people follow you it is a sign they are interested in the value you can bring them and you should do your best to deliver. The best way to do this is to pay attention (listen) to the problems they are having, the questions they are asking and topics they are discussing. Even though you ultimately hope to turn followers into customers, you must resist from posting too much self-serving content. Instead become a go to resource for help, knowledge and conversation. 8. Pin A Tweet

One of the downsides to Twitter is how fast paced it is. With the average lifespan of a tweet being less than an hour, it can be difficult to get your posts seen. To try to combat this issue, Twitter released the ability to ‘Pin A Tweet’ to your profile. When you pin a tweet, it will be shown as the first tweet when people come to your profile. When you post something important, such as a new blog post, you might want to experiment with pinning it to your profile. If you produced an explainer video for your business, you should consider pinning it so people can easily access it and learn about your product/service. If you are not already pinning tweets to your profile page, start experimenting with it now.

9. Retweet With Comments

When you retweet a post on Twitter, you now have the option to add a comment. We highly recommend all businesses take advantage of this feature. Adding context to your retweets will help to draw attention from your followers and can position your business as an expert. On top of that, it opens up an avenue for a conversation with the originator of the tweet. Take the extra 30 seconds to add a thoughtful comment to a tweet to either give more context for your audience or strike up a conversation about the topic covered in the post.

The Don’ts

1. Send Automated Direct Messages

This could be a 2,000+ word rant, but let’s keep it short. If you use a tool to send an automated direct message every time someone follows you, stop doing it immediately. It will get you unfollowed by the majority of people it is sent to, including us, and will be a bad first impression for those who do not decide to unfollow you. The benefits of automated direct messages are far outweighed by the negatives, so simply don’t use them. If you want to send a Direct Message to new followers, do it manually and make it personal.

2. Start A Tweet With ‘@’ (Unless It Is A Reply)

This small, but fatal mistake can greatly decrease the reach of your posts. When you start a tweet with ‘@’ it is seen only by the person tagged in the tweet and people that follow both you and that person. When replying to someone directly this is fine. However, many businesses mistakenly start tweets with ‘@’ not realizing it will be treated as a reply. If you have to start a tweet with someone’s Twitter handle, include a period before it. By including a period first, Twitter will treat it as a normal tweet, not a reply, and thus all of your followers will see it.

3. Follow to Unfollow

One strategy businesses have used to try to increase their Twitter followers is following a bunch of accounts in hopes that they will follow back and then unfollowing them once they do. This strategy certainly could lead to more followers, but it defeats the purpose of social media. As a business your main goal should not be more followers, as this does not make you any money directly. Instead you want to create a community of people that you have built trust with over time. This trust will lead to sales, not the initial follow.

Instead, follow only people that you think will bring value to your newsfeed and that you hope to be connected with long term. A short term boost in followers might seem exciting, but in the end only valuable relationships will lead to business success.

4. Send All of Your Tweets At Once

We all know that person who tweets 10 tweets back to back to back. When we see this it drives us crazy, because it is doing far more harm than good. For starters, spreading your posts throughout the day allows your business to reach different time zones and demographics. When you post everything at once, you are missing the majority of your followers, since they are not on Twitter 24/7. On top of that, your posts cannibalize each other’s potential engagement. Instead of receiving Retweets and Favorites throughout the day, you are forcing followers to choose which posts they like back. It is highly unlikely that someone will engage with several of your posts at once, which is why you should find an ideal posting frequency for your business and stick to it.

5. Protect Your Tweets

  • Your followers can not Retweet your posts to increase the reach
  • People can tweet to you, but if they aren’t following you they can’t see your response
  • You have to manually accept every new follower (talk about wasted time)

Bottom line: There are really no business benefits to having a private Twitter account, so make sure your business’s Twitter account it public.

6. Try To Sell All The Time

As a business it is easy to post too many promotional posts. We forget that most people in the world have less passion about our businesses than we do. Wanting to share our amazing companies with the world we begin posting tweet after tweet promoting events, discounts, new features, etc. There is certainly a time and place for these types of posts on social media, but is important to not bombard followers with promotional content all day.
Tip: Many experts swear by the 5-3-2 rule that is shown below. It is a great starting point for most businesses, but be sure to experiment with what frequency works best for your business and audience.

7. Retweet Links Before Reading

Dive into your Twitter post analytics and you will find something very alarming: many posts have more retweets than link clicks. This means people are sharing your posts without actually reading them first. As a business it is very important that you know exactly what you are sharing with your followers, so we recommend taking the extra time to not only read what is being said, but also who is saying it. We have actually seen several businesses tweet posts that are directing traffic to a a competitors website. Needless to say, they did not click the link before hitting Retweet.

8. Engage With Only Your Followers

Imagine going to a networking event with a few friends. You show up together and for the entire event you only speak to one another. I think we can both agree this is a terrible strategy and it will lead to no new connections.

Go on Twitter however and it is very common for people to only engage with their followers. We completely encourage you to continue to do this, but challenge you to engage with people you are not connected with as well. Monitor relevant hashtags and keywords looking for opportunities to engage with new people. Join conversations, share their content and make new connection.

9. #Overuse #Hashtags

#Please #do #not #tweet #like #this. Hashtags were created to make it easier to find content and conversations about specific topics. When used effectively hashtags can significantly increase your reach and engagement, while also helping you find new leads. Adding a hashtag to every word in your tweet however will result in many users unfollowing you and very little boost in engagement and reach.

Try to incorporate 1-3 hashtags in your tweets. Only include a hashtag if it is relevant to both the content you are sharing and your target audience as a whole and avoid using trending hashtags just because they are popular.
