Suspect in attack at U.S. Capitol described as average jock whose mental health appeared to quickly unravel

WASHINGTON — The man who police say rammed his car into a security barrier at the U.S. Capitol on Friday and was fatally shot by police after emerging from the vehicle with a knife was a lifelong athlete whose mental health had started to concern his friends and family in recent months.

Noah Green, 25, was identified as the suspect in the attack that killed one U.S. Capitol Police officer and injured another, according to a law enforcement official briefed on the inquiry. Those who knew Green described him as quiet, athletic and non-violent but also told USA TODAY they were concerned about recent changes in his behavior.

Police say Green rammed a dark-colored sedan into a security barrier outside the U.S. Capitol, killing Officer William "Billy" Evans, an 18-year veteran of the U.S. Capitol Police Department. After the crash, police say, Green got out of the car with a knife in his hand, ran toward officers and ignored their commands. Officers opened fire and killed him.

D.C. Metropolitan Police Chief Robert J. Contee III said Green's attack did not "appear to be terrorism-related."

Contee said police are investigating to determine Green's motive. He said Green was not known to either D.C. Police or the USCP and was not previously considered a threat to lawmakers.

People who went to school with Green and played sports with him growing up described him as the average jock: athletic, popular, even working at a gym in college.

The violence on Friday, they say, was jarring compared to the person they knew, but Green's recent social media activity seemed to offer clues that he'd changed. Some noted his growing support for the Nation of Islam – which the Southern Poverty Law Center designates as an anti-Semitic extremist group – and its leader, Louis Farrakhan.

The Southern Poverty Law Center describes the Nation of Islam as a group that has programs and events that aim to lift up African Americans. But the SPLC also says it has a "theology of innate Black superiority over whites" and a belief system that is "consistently rejected by mainstream Muslims."

Green was born in West Virginia but spent most of his life growing up in a sparsely populated area of Virginia with a large family, including nine siblings, USA TODAY learned through multiple interviews. He was athletic, playing basketball and football growing up.

He graduated from Christopher Newport University in 2019, where he played football as a defensive back, a spokesman for the school in Newport News, Virginia, told USA TODAY. On his biography page for the team, Green noted he was majoring in business and the "person in history he'd most like to meet is Malcolm X."

Andre Toran, who was a captain on the football team at the time, said Green was a "really quiet guy" who would crack jokes every once in a while but usually just smiled instead of chiming in on conversations.

"I know people say this all the time, but the guy who I played with is not the same person who did this," said Toran, a reporter at the Courier-Journal in Louisville, Kentucky, part of the USA TODAY Network.

Toran said while he moved away to attend graduate school in Chicago, Green's mental state became an issue of concern among their friends.

Toran shared a Facebook post from Green during the COVID-19 pandemic in which Green accused his roommates of drugging him. Green wrote that he'd moved out but was suffering from withdrawals that included seizures and a lack of appetite, along with "paranoia" and "depression." He wrote in the post that he was also experiencing "suicidal ideation."

Green's Facebook profile was taken down Friday after the Capitol attack.

KC Humphries, who attended CNU with Green, told USA TODAY they worked together at the school's gym.

"He kind of came off as the average football athlete," she said.

But, she added, she noticed the recent changes in his social media posts.

"They were very weird. It was posts about joining his church and 'one day you'll see' kind of stuff," Humphries said. "It was just a lot of weird, kind of cult stuff."

On what appeared to be Green's Facebook page, he posted last month about struggling over the last several years and his issues during the pandemic, including losing a job. He talked about his recent "spiritual journey."

"To be honest, these past few years have been tough, and these past few months have been tougher," one post said. "I have been tried with some of the biggest, unimaginable tests in my life. I am currently now unemployed, after I left my job, partly due to afflictions."

But, he said, Farrakhan's teaching had been a guiding path for him, calling him "my spiritual father" and saying despite his path being thwarted, "Allah (God) has chosen me for other things."

In other posts, Green shared speeches by Farrakhan and Elijah Muhammad, who previously led the Nation of Islam, and wrote about the end times.

What we know: Capitol Police officer, suspect dead after driving into barrier

One of Green's brothers told The Washington Post that Noah Green appeared to have mentally unraveled in the last several years. He abruptly moved from Virginia to Indiana and told his brother, Brendan, he was suffering from hallucinations, heart palpitations, headaches and suicidal thoughts. Brendan Green told the paper his brother informed him the drugs told him to move to Indianapolis.

In Indiana, Noah told his brother that people were attempting to break into his apartment. Brendan Green said he flew out to Indianapolis but didn't see anything suspicious and told The Post that Noah's “mind didn’t seem right.”

A few months ago, Noah Green moved to Botswana, his brother told the Post. The brothers kept in contact and at one point, Noah told Brendan that "his mind was telling him to basically commit suicide" and said he'd jumped in front of a car, Brendan told The Post. Several weeks ago, Brendan allowed Noah to come live with him after Noah said he was "in a really bad situation."

Investigators on Friday were still digging into the suspect’s background and examining whether he had any history of mental health issues. They were also working to obtain warrants to access his online accounts.

  Special to The Star

That "Roots Rock Renaissance Man" is returning to play a show at the Hong Kong Inn in Ventura on Friday night. Deke Dickerson will be the one wearing a shirt or a coat so scary that Van Gogh would gouge out his own eyes, but perhaps sew his ear back on because Dickerson and his revolving backup band, the Ecco-Fonics, know lots of rockabilly songs and roots rock songs that have enabled him to remain that tuneful rarity — a working musician. For decades. Dickerson can even afford one of those scary cowboy hats when a Dodgers hat this fall would be more in step with the times.

Dickerson, however, is not into sports — he’s definitely into music. While his sensibilities remain stuck in the '50s — or back when even AM radio was cool — or back when rock 'n' roll was still in its first decade of parent-scaring spectacle. Dickerson has always done his own thing — if there’s a bandwagon, he's driving and he's not picking up random riders. He gets paid to have fun and be weird. Even though he's a fake Deke (his real name is Derek) he first entered the musical radar as half of the Dave & Deke Combo.

Since the mid '90s, he has released a double-digit number of albums. One of his recent efforts was "Deke Dickerson Sings the Great Instrumental Hits," and what a great idea that was. He added lyrics to all those famous songs that never needed a frontman before. Then there's "Bringing Back the Trash," an album made with the Trashmen out of Minnesota who had a hit with "Surfin' Bird" in 1963, a song that still annoys many.

Dickerson is also an underpaid writer for a number of music magazines, used to host a Guitar Geek Festival behind the Orange Curtain and did the soundtrack for one of the most hilariously disturbing movies of all time, "The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia" from 2009. He also collects ugly album covers — a scary selection of which can be found on his website. That Dickerson travels the world, obviously is a contributing factor to his growing album collection. As a Renaissance Man under a cowboy hat, not surprisingly, Dickerson once again proved to be a fun interview.

Deke, what’s the latest in your world? What'd I miss?

Well, you know, just more of the same — just touring the world. I need to make a new record, but I still have a lot of recording projects — just keeping busy.

The Trashmen album is still the latest one?

Yup, that’s the last one I put out.

I guess you can be called a Hi Hat Entertainment regular. You've played Yolie's and the Ventura Beach Club, and now it's on to the Hong Kong Inn. …

Yeah, we've played at the Hong Kong Inn once or twice — I can't remember.

So as a "Roots Rock Renaissance Man," how did you go about finding your particular niche in this crazy business?

Well, it's funny because I always liked music of the '50s. When I was super young, I was into Elvis, Bill Haley and Chuck Berry, and then I went through a couple of permutations when I thought, "Hey, maybe I should be into punk rock or maybe I should be into whatever the kids my age are listening to," but I always sort of gravitated back to rockabilly, '50s rock 'n' roll and vintage country; and you know, at one point I kinda said, "Well, this is what I like and this is what I'm good at, so i'm just gonna keep doing it." And luckily for me, there's been a couple of times in my career when it seemed there were a lot of bands around and they would break up and disappear. I've watched so many fads come along and then disappear that, I guess, I have just carved my own niche, and I just kept going with it.

They come, they go and those dreaded "creative differences" live on.

It's funny — you know, something will get popular and then people will copy it but you can always kind of tell that they're just jumping on a bandwagon and just trying to make a quick buck. When you look at the people that have been in it for a long time, you know, like Big Sandy, James Intveld and people like that, you can tell that they really love it and it's not like they're trying to jump on some bandwagon.

And the Blasters are playing in T.O. in a few weeks. …

Exactly, yeah. …

Why has rockabilly stood the test of time? It never gets too big or too small and it never goes away — why do you suppose that is?

You know, there's part of me that thinks it's really weird that rockabilly is still popular because when I first got into it, there was still that aura of '50s nostalgia, but nowadays, people that are into rockabilly — none of them were actually around in the '50s — except that now and then we still play with some of the legacy artists, but all these rockabilly bands and the fans? They weren't around in the '50s, so they have no nostalgia for it, so there's something that's just a lot more basic and primal when you hear Johnny Cash or Gene Vincent or early Elvis or George Jones or any of that kind of music — it's simple and direct, but it's also very powerful. It's funny to me when you play a Johnny Cash song anywhere in the world, people react to it the same way. Like I said, there's something that's just primal about it and it speaks to them.

The tattooed greaser kids that go to rockabilly shows are like Civil War re-enactors — they'd rather be somewhere else.

Yeah, exactly. We joke about that all the time, and it's a funny thing because it's just one of the classic looks and people see it and they think, "Wow — I wanna look like that, too," and next thing you know, they're greasing their hair back and playing the part.

Yeah, Brylcreem and tats, man.

Yup.

So, how many times have you had to reinvent yourself over the years? Is that an ongoing process or are you satisfied with Deke 2017?

You know, it's funny that I've never had to re-invent myself by buying a new set of clothes or calling myself a different name or anything like that. I mean, for me, the nice thing about what I do is that I can just go find a new field to plow. It's like, "Well, maybe I've played this place too much, and there's plenty of work over here." So if you just keep moving around — and I've played all over the world — it seems like you can always find a fresh audience, and that's just kind of how I've done it.

Although you have expanded your horizons, don't people go out to see live music less than they used to, and aren't there fewer places to play?

There is that and it's interesting because when I first started touring in the late '90s, I would say most of what I did was jump in a van and we'd go out for four or five weeks and we would play every single night of the week, and we'd play these little, small towns, but that was just how you did it, but nowadays, I'll fly out and play a festival and then I'll fly back. Or maybe I'll fly out to the East Coast and play five or six shows and then fly back. It's definitely harder to pull off a Tuesday night gig in Fort Wayne, Indiana. You just can't really do that anymore. I'm still busy — you just have to figure out a different way to make it work.

It sounds like you've found perspective — no more 500-mile drives to play for 20 people and get paid 50 bucks.

Well, I just remember something my dad said: "You can work hard or you can work smart."

Words of wisdom. So what happens the other 22 hours on the road when you're not playing?

I've got my hand in a bunch of different projects. I do a lot of writing and I've written a couple of books and I write for different guitar magazines.

Do they pay or are you as underpaid as we are? That's a trick question.

Well, everything I've done has been a paid project, but I do joke about my writing. I've managed to find the one career that pays less than music.

I used to work for American Songwriter — sure do miss those $10 checks.

Yeah, well, it's still not as bad as acting, you know? I think that's the worst. I also have a recording studio in my house, and honestly the thing that has helped me the most financially over the years is getting songs in TV and movies. I've managed to get a couple of projects placed a year and they've proven to be the best financially for me.

The check's in the mail.

Exactly.

When was the last time you woke up in a cool place, pleasantly realizing that it was your music that made the road trip possible?

Well, that happens to me all the time. I'm getting ready to go to Australia and as soon as I land in Melbourne, they're going to drive me three or four hours out into the country because I'm playing this rockabilly festival that's out in the middle of nowhere in Australia, so I'm looking forward to that; and you know, I was just in Spain on the beach on the Mediterranean Sea — just all kinds of things like that.

Do they have waves in the Mediterranean Sea?

The waves are pretty bad, but they do surf a lot in France on the Atlantic side but not really the Mediterranean Sea.

Who’s the drunkest person you've ever seen that wasn't you or in your band?

I tell you what — when I first moved to California, we used to play this biker bar called the Blue Saloon, and one night there was this guy at the bar who was so drunk he couldn't stand up, and then later as I'm loading out my stuff at the end of the night, I see him on his motorcycle revving it up in the parking lot. So I go over and tell him, "Man, you are seriously too drunk to ride. Let's call a cab, man," but he was so drunk he couldn't even acknowledge me or speak. I tried to get him off the bike for about five minutes and then next thing I know, I saw him speeding down Lankershim Boulevard on his bike and thought, "Wow — that guy's dead." And the next night, I come back and he's there at the bar drinking again.

Maybe he lived a block away.

I have no idea but that was back in the good ol' days of drinking and driving.

What's the worst advice anyone ever gave you?

Well, the problem is that people have always tried to give me good and bad advice but I've never taken any of it. I guess I've always been too hard-headed and confident in what I wanted to do. I would've been much better off if I had've listened at least a little bit.

Just a little bit?

Yeah, exactly.

How's your weird album cover collection going these days? I would assume it's ever evolving work in progress?

Well, you know what's great about that is that now that people know that I’m into it — and I have that little thing on my website about weird album covers — so now when people find weird crap out there, they just send it to me.

The Frivolous Five? Gotta love that one. …

Yeah, so every once in a while, a guy will send a package of 10 or 20 weird records that he found. Or if I go to a record swap meet, some guy will say, "Hey, man, I found a really, really messed up one for you — I've been saving it for you, so it's a lot easier than it used to be but it's kinda funny being known as the guy who really loves weird album covers.

Are any of the bands good besides being weird?

Well, it's funny but some of those records I have realty loved musically. There's one that has this fat guy on the dock holding a fish and there's this beautiful young woman in a gingham dress sitting at his feet as if he's the most wonderful guy ever. The record's great — it's him playing Hammond organ and this guy named Pete Drake who was a famous Nashville pedal steel player, playing pedal, and it's really good. It's recorded really well and I was kind of shocked at how much I liked the record.

I know we talked about this before but I gotta come back to "The Wild And Wonder Whites of West Virginia," one of the strangest movies ever made. What the hell is up with that?

Well, the director was a guy I’ve known around L.A. for a long time, and he had done the original Jesco White movie called "The Dancing Outlaw." It was from the early '90s and it started the whole thing — it kinda made Jesco a star and everything. So for years there was talk about making a sequel and my friend said if he ever got the funding, he wanted me to do the music for it and I said, "Great, count me in." It took several years but he finally got Johnny Knoxville from "Jackass" to put up the money for it, so I wound up doing the music. It was so much different than the first film — I thought I would be doing country, bluegrass, old timey and whatever, but it ended up just being all over the map but it was really fun.

Yeah, what about that one White chick that looks like Zippy the Pinhead and boasts, "I'm the pretty one!" Or the other one that gets out of jail, stalks her ex, gets him wasted and marries him in Walmart? Can't top that.

Yeah. You know what's interesting — all my people come from Virginia and they all live up in the mountains of Virginia and they all make jokes about West Virginia because literally, once you get into West Virginia, it's just a whole other world there, man. Remember at the beginning of the movie when the guy is talking about West Virginia as a colony — just like the Europeans went into Africa and took all their natural resources and then left? That's basically what's been done to West Virginia.

Yup, the coal companies reinvented feudalism and the people there were the serfs that worked in the mines. Anyway, you have roots in Missouri and now in California as well, so who of the following would wear a Deke T-shirt — Harry Truman, Stan Musial or Governor Jerry Brown?

Wow, that's a good question. I don't know. I've never had much luck with any politicians, so I'd probably just go with Stan Musial.

Where do songs come from? Is it a gift or a skill that can be learned?

I think that everybody's different but for me, they kind of come and go in waves of inspiration and they just seem to come out of the air when I do write them. There's guys in Nashville that have this sort of process, "OK, me and this other guy are gonna get together and just hash out ideas and at the end of the day, we're gonna have four songs." I've never been able to do that. I might not write a song for six months and then I'll be driving around and something just comes into my head, and then I've got to pull over and write it down. There it is, you know?

What don't you do now that you used to do when you first started this crazy adventure?

Well, it's no secret that the music business is full of con men, thieves and liars, so when you first get started, you sort of fall for these people. You know, they always have these great plans, talking about this and that and how much they're going to do for your career and all that, but after you've been doing it for 25 or 30 years like I have, you can see right through those kind of guys. Now it's like, "If we have business to conduct here, just tell me how much you're going to pay me, otherwise, I just need to be moving on because I don't have time for this." So I don't have time for the con men and flim flam artists in the music business anymore.

Who would you pay to see?

I'd like to have seen Little Richard and his band right when they were breaking big — like, 1955 or 1956 — I'll bet that would've been an absolutely unbelievable show.

Yeah, you can see them in some of those old rock 'n' roll movies — those guys clearly raged — plus, he was one of the funniest guys I've ever talked to. OK, Deke, that should be more than I need to know. I look forward to seeing you in a week or so.

I'm looking forward to it; and if you want to say something unusual about the show, you can say we're going to have Ventura's own Brent Harding who plays bass for Social Distortion. …

And he can sing, too. …

I know — but he's actually going to be playing drums. Another guy, Shorty Poole, is going to play bass and I'm gonna bring my bass too, so we're gonna have a bass-off.

Yikes, that is news.

It'll be a fun one. …

A new low. …

Exactly, I'll talk to you later.

The United States of Television

For better or worse, we Americans love our television shows. They’re an integral part of the American zeitgeist, helping to entertain us and serving as an artifact for future generations to know where we were as a society during specific eras. With the sheer size of the U.S., television also helps develop perceptions (justified or otherwise) about various regions. For instance, if someone were to say “New Jersey” to you, there’s a good chance you’d instantly think of Tony Soprano and his crew. With that in mind, here’s a map of The United States of Television.

DOCFEST 2009: Peter Galvin's Review of The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia

whites_poster.jpgThe Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia chronicles a year in the life of a family of self-proclaimed hillbillies. One member of the White family, Jesco, has already achieved cult status, after being featured in a 1991 PBS special called Dancing Outlaw, which spawned a sequel in 1994 and a narrative feature earlier this year. Jesco is an Appalacian "mountain dancer" whose many run-ins with the law have delayed his dream of being hailed as a worthy successor to his late father, the famous mountain dancer D. Ray White. Director Julien Nitzberg now offers us a chance to meet the rest of the White family, which is extensive, but even with so many lives to explore he fails to discover anyone with the same level of natural charisma as Jesco White.

Scrutinizing the White family tree is enough to give one a headache. We are introduced to enough aunts, uncles, mothers and grandchildren that the filmmakers are forced to caption each family member's name even after featuring them on-screen several times. At the top of the tree is the matriarch of the family, Bertie Mae, who with her daughter Mamie attempts to establish some sort of order within the group while their children become involved in increasingly-dangerous circumstances. From prescription pills to attempted murder, the exploits of the Whites are often lessons in fatalism, a fact of which the family is disturbingly proud.

Amidst the head counting, a few stories do rise and take focus, such as a trip to pick up Mousie White from jail and Kirk White's battle with Child Protective Services to see her newborn daughter, but by and large the film is representative of the Dickhouse production logo--a company run by a crew from MTV's Jackass. Like its TV ancestor, the footage is more focused on chronicling day-to-day drug use and exploiting violent antics for shock value than exploring anything below the surface. The most interesting moments are probably accidental, when the Whites stop mugging for the camera and let their guard down--Jesco's reflections on fame and fan expectations are particularly memorable--but then it's off to another night at the bar to watch the Whites get drunk. Occasionally, local police and government officials are interviewed in an effort to situate the family's poor behavior within the community, but for the most part Nitzberg seems hell-bent on remaining impartial towards his subjects. Perhaps I would be too, after getting an earful of the multiple stabbings and shootings of which the Whites freely boast.

The Wild and Wonderful Whites is a film about an unattractive and offensive group of people. It's not my place to make judgment on their character, but it is my duty to tell you if the film about them is any good, and frankly it's not. Forgoing the fact that the film says nothing insightful about its characters, its meandering structure forces even the exploitative elements to grow tiresome well before its 85 minutes are up. Worse still, it's a film that encourages its subjects to continue their damaging lifestyle in the pursuit of some sort of fame, never realizing they're being laughed at, not with.

25 Great Movies About Terribly Dysfunctional Families

It’s almost that time of year: the holiday season, when we are forced to spend plenty of time with our crazy families. Many of us will be traveling long distances home for awkward dinners with our extended families, biting our tongues when it comes to political matters and keeping long-held secrets hidden away. But, it could be worse: you could be a member of these 25 movie families, who are most likely much more insane than your own.

Home for the Holidays

It’s the quintessential Thanksgiving movie (one of the few, really) featuring a crazy family: mother-daughter madness, homophobic sisters, obnoxious kids, and a destroyed turkey.

The Godfather Trilogy

Let’s just count these three movies as one, OK? After all, the screwed up family problems don’t end in the first movie; fratricide rears its ugly head, plus there’s Francis Ford Coppola’s own poor choice to cast his own daughter in the third film.

Margot at the Wedding

The relationship between sisters is a frequently explored cinematic trope, but rarely is it so biting than in Noah Baumbach’s Hamptons-set comedy.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DNAI9bhBFU

The Royal Tenenbaums

In this modern classic, the Tenenbaums clan is the perfect dysfunctional family: quirky, weird, estranged, yet super stylish.

Ordinary People

There’s no place quite as chilly as Lake Forest, Illinois, as Robert Redford’s dramatic tearjerker depicts a group of emotional Midwesterners trying their best to cope (or not to cope) with a death in the family.

Rachel Getting Married

Cinema’s most multicultural wedding ceremony is overshadowed by a drug-addicted sister and the most dramatic loading of a dishwasher ever captured on film.

Eve’s Bayou

If you discovered your father cheating on your mother, wouldn’t you put a voodoo curse on him? Seems totally normal to me.

Dogtooth

A dark satire in which two Greek parents deliberately confuse their three kids about the world in a masochistic fashion ends, predictably, not well for anyone.

Flirting With Disaster

This wacky comedy about a guy finding his wacky birth parents features Mary Tyler Moore’s character showing off her perfect breasts to her son within the first 20 minutes.

The Grifters

Spoiler alert: there’s some mild incest that could either be sister-on-brother or mother-on-son, proving that a family of con artists is perhaps the worst kind of family.

Magnolia

Terrible fathers populate the Los Angeles of Paul Thomas Anderson, where they’re only outnumbered by the frogs that fall from the sky.

Mommie Dearest

A perennial Mother’s Day classic for Old Hollywood obsessives, gay guys, and everyone who hates wire hangers.

Grey Gardens

Just imagine how crazy your mother would drive you if you had to live with her in a dilapidated mansion in East Hampton with a few hundred cats as she constantly reminds you of how you could have married a Kennedy.

Tokyo Story

Dysfunctional families aren’t specific to the United States: this classic Japanese film proves that ungrateful children are a universal problem.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

The family that slays together stays together, but they also put themselves at risk of accidental mutilation. (Can you imagine how difficult it is to clean that place?)

Flowers in the Attic

Being locked in a small space with your siblings is bad enough, but it’s worse when it’s at the behest of your awful mother and your scary grandmother. (Per usual, incest ensues.)

The Squid and the Whale

The Is six flags great america open album is still the latest one?

Do they the weird and wonderful whites of west virginia or are you as underpaid as we are?

I tell you what — when I first moved to California, we used to play this biker bar called the Blue Saloon, and one night there was this guy at the bar who was so drunk he couldn't stand up, and then later as Sphero bb 8 battery not charging loading out my stuff at the end of the night, I see him on his motorcycle revving it up in the parking lot.

There it is, you purina one puppy feeding chart don't you do now that you used to do when you first started this crazy adventure?

Being a teenager is hard enough, but the awfulness is likely to be exaggerated when your parents split up and your dad is trying to sleep with the girl you have a crush on (and, meanwhile, your younger brother can’t stop masturbating in public).

Death at a Funeral

Funerals are the settings where family secrets are most likely to be spilled, but this British comedy makes your typical burial seem like a piece of cake considering the family its the center is full of jerks, drug users, and a dwarf.

The Virgin Suicides

Catholic fanaticism in ’70s-era Michigan takes a nasty turn, providing the moral that you shouldn’t lock your five daughters away from the dudes who want to make out with them.

The House of Yes

You know Thanksgiving is going to be weird when your mom announces her intention to hide the knives from your manic-depressive, Jackie O-obsessed sister who hates your fiancée.

The Family Stone

The eldest Stone brother brings his uptight girlfriend home to meet the family and ask for his grandmother’s engagement ring (get it?!), only to find that everyone in his free-spirited clan hates her.

Happiness

On the one hand, you have three sisters who pretty much despise each other. On the other, a child-molesting dad who teaches his son about ejaculation. Don’t watch this with your parents.

The Ref

Denis Leary plays a criminal who is forced to spend Christmas with a bickering couple and their awful family, who he’s holding hostage.

Parenthood

Are the Buckmans cinemas greatest dysfunctional family? In Ron Howard’s ensemble comedy, the Midwestern clan deals with a slew of emotional issues in the worst possible ways.

The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia

This Appalachian clan of murderers, thieves, drug dealers, pill poppers, and tap dancers is not just the center of this documentary about a nearly lost group of mountain outlaws — these characters also won the hearts of an audience that has made the film a modern cult classic.

Worse still, it's a film that encourages its subjects to continue their damaging lifestyle in the pursuit of some sort of fame, never realizing they're being laughed at, the weird and wonderful whites of west virginia with.

Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain momma

2. Pepperoni Rolls

If you've never had one, give me your address and I'll send ya some in the mail. Seriously, they're that good.

3. A 'holler' is where you live

Common directions go like this: "Head up the holler, turn left at the big Maple and follow that road to the little white church next to the creek"

4. We're Mountaineers, NOT Hillbilly's

Take my word for it. Or, Google it.

5. You can order hot dogs from a school bus AKA Hillbilly Hotdogs, though

You thought you'd seen it all, right?

6. Speaking of hot dogs, it's called sauce, NOT chili

If you order chili, you'll get a bowl of chili and a hot dog on the side.

7. Sweet Tea is meant to be sweetened, hence the name

You shouldn't even bother asking if we'd like that sweetened or unsweetened

YUMMY YUMMY, IN MY TUMMY!!!

9. Y'all means 'you all'

Y'ALL, check out how insanely beautiful our state capital is!

YOLO. By the way, an estimated 450 jumpers and over 200,000 spectators were in attendance for Bridge Day at the New River Gorge in 2016.

15. When shopping, we use "buggies"

Regardless of what they're supposed to be called, you'll always refer to these as buggies.
