Texas A&M baseball run-rules Prairie View in midweek action, 22-2

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Prairie View A&M came to College Station on Wednesday evening looking for its first win of the season while Texas A&M was looking for its 10th victory in 11 games. Not surprisingly, it was the home team that came out on top in a rout, 22-2, in a game that was called after seven innings due to the run rule.

The Aggies scored at least three runs in each of the first five innings with another two in the final frame and almost every starter was lifted early as a number of players were able to see action in the win. The Maroon and White also hit a trio of home runs on the game and outhit the Panthers, 14-5, while taking advantage of 13 walks, six more batters hit by pitches and three errors by Prairie View.

The Aggies wasted little time jumping out to a lead as the home team put three runners across in the bottom of the first inning. After Bryce Blaum led off with a walk and stole second, Will Frizzell launched a two-strike pitch over the left field wall. It was the first baseman's team-leading fifth home run of the year. Two batters later, Logan Britt tripled to right field. After a Trevor Werner walk, Britt was able to steal home to make it a 3-0 lead.

A&M brought three more runs across in the bottom of the second inning as well. Taylor Smith led off with a walk and, after a Kalae Harrison strikeout, Blaum and Frizzell walked as well to load the bases with one out. A sacrifice fly to left by Austin Bost brought Smith home to extend the lead to 4-0. After Britt drew a walk to load the bases, Zane Schmidt walked to bring Blaum home. Werner then hit a ball that was misplayed by third baseman Sebastian Coria to allow Frizzell to score to make it a 6-0 contest.

The home team really broke things open in the bottom of the third as the Aggies saw eight runners score in the frame. Smith led off with a solo home run, the first of his Aggie career. Harrison then singled prairie view a&m baseball the right side and come home on a Blaum double to left. Frizzell drew a walk and then Bost doubled to center to plate Blaum. Frizzell was able to score on a passed ball. Still with no outs, Britt hit a two-run homer to left center. The outfielder's third long ball of the year made it a 12-0 game. Schmidt drew a walk, Werner was hit by a pitch and Ryan Targac had an infield single to load the bases. Smith was hit by a pitch to score one run and then Harrison drew a walk to score another to bring the score to 14-0. New pitcher Samuel Denker came on with the bases loaded and no outs and was able to get Blaum to fly out to left and pinch hitter Logan Sartori to hit into a double play to end the inning.

Prairie View was able to get a run of its own across in the top of the fourth to break up the shutout. With reliever Will Johnston on the mound, Jordon Ginn led off with a single to left. Kellen Rogers then reached on a fielding error by Johnston. Coria grounded into a double play but Ginn was able to reach third on the play. He then scored when Alex Martinez singled to right, cutting the lead to 14-1.

A&M had yet another multi-run frame in the bottom of the inning, though, with three more runs. With one out, Britt singled through the left side and then Werner reached on a throwing error by second baseman Nick Sciubba. After a Werner flyout allowed Britt to reach third, pinch hitter Bryan Sturges singled through the left side to score Britt. Freshman pinch hitter Kimble Schuessler then came up for the prairie view a&m baseball plate appearance of his career and hit a two-run double to left, extending the Aggie lead to 17-1.

In the fifth inning, Sartori drew a one-out walk before Rody Barker was hit by a pitch. The runners each advanced a base on a wild pitch to put both in scoring position. Britt went down swinging for the second out but a Hunter Coleman infield single scored both runners to stretch the lead to 19-1. The Aggies loaded the bases with a Werner single to right and Sturges reaching on a fielding error by shortstop Andrew Garcia. Schuessler then came up for his second-ever plate appearance and walked to score Sturges, making it a 20-1 game through five.

Freshman Wyatt Tucker was on the mound for A&M in the top of the sixth when the Panthers were able to prairie view a&m baseball another run across. Avery Williams drew a one-out walk and then stole second. A Benjamin Ybarra two-out single to center was able to score him and cut the lead to 20-2.

In the bottom of the inning, though, A&M had yet another multi-run frame. Brett Minnich drew a leadoff walk and then Sartori was hit by a pitch. After a pair of outs, Coleman was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Werner then singled through the right side to plate Minnich and Sartori, making it a 22-2 contest.

Starter Chris Weber (1-0) was credited with the win as he threw three scoreless innings, giving up one hit and striking out four without allowing a walk. Starter Derrick Curry (0-1) took the loss for the Panthers as he tossed 1 2/3 innings and gave up six runs on two hits with two strikeouts and six walks.

Britt finished 3-for-4 with a home run, a triple, three RBI and two runs scored. Because of how many subs the Aggies used and how prairie view a&m baseball walks the team took, Werner was the only other player with multiple hits as he was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Prairie View had five hits on the contest with Brayden Johnson having the only extra-base hit with a double.

Texas A&M (11-4) will next host Samford for a three-game series this coming weekend. Prairie View (0-9) will play at home for the first time this season as the Panthers host Southern for a SWAC series this coming weekend.

PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – For the second straight weekend, Texas Southern baseball battled back from a deficit with a late-inning rally as they defeated Prairie View A&M 6-4 in Friday’s opener.

TSU wasted no time in setting the tone in the first as Justin Cooper hit a one-out single, stole second, and reached third on a PVAMU error. Reigning SWAC Co-Hitter of the Week Oscar Ponce continued his hot streak as he drove in Cooper with an RBI single for a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, Avery Chatman led the third off with a single and moved over following Tyrese Clayborne’s sac bunt. Two batters later with two outs, Ponce once again came up big with another RBI single to score Chatman for the 2-0 lead.

TSU starter Kam Field was cruising and ready to get out the fourth unscathed with two outs and four strikeouts to his tally thus far. However, PVAMU would hit a single followed by back-to-back doubles to lead 3-2. A stolen base and walk led to another RBI single and a 4-2 deficit before an inning-ending flyout.

TSU had its chances over the next few innings and came up big in the sixth with two outs. Tyson Thompson reached base on a PVAMU error and Avery Chatman singled. Clayborne drove in Thompson with an RBI single for a 4-3 deficit.

Fields kept PVAMU at bay defensively and the offense returned to the scoreboard as Thompson opened the eighth inning with a leadoff triple followed by Rueben Bennevendo’s RBI single to tie the contest at 4-4 as the single also chased out PVAMU starter Kyle Smith. However, the inning came to a disappointing end as PVAMU recorded a pick-off followed by a groundout and fly out to center. PVAMU opened the eighth with a leadoff single and the go-ahead runner moved into scoring position after a sac bunt. However, the runner would remain at second as Fields forced a flyout and foul out to end fidelity bank and trust anamosa iowa inning.

Once again, the Tigers used late-inning theatrics as Cooper singled to open the inning and made his way to third after a PVAMU error which also forced a pitching change. Ponce drove in Cooper for his third RBI of the game and the go-ahead run as TSU led 5-4. Dean Salazar entered as a pinch hitter and recorded a single. Nic Garza followed with a single to load the bases which set up Jordan Vidato’s sac fly to center for the 6-4 lead.

Fields struck out the leadoff batter in the bottom of the ninth and set up a prairie view a&m baseball inning for the team’s first road win of 2021.

Ponce finished 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored while Cooper was 2-for-4 with two runs. Clayborne, Garza, Thompson, and Chatman also had two hits apiece. Fields struck out nine in a complete-game performance.

The series resumes Saturday with a 2 p.m. first pitch at Prairie View A&M.
