Drivers are an essential part of your computer as they tell your software how to work with a piece of hardware. Being an important part of your machine, you need to make sure your drivers are always up to date. There are apps for how to automatically update drivers if you don’t want to get your hands dirty.

These apps find out what machine you have and what drivers it needs. Then they fetch the required drivers and install them for you on your machine. Also, they create a backup of your existing drivers first in case things go wrong and you need to roll back your drivers.

Windows 10 includes a new option to prevent installing driver updates on your computer. On this version of the operating system, updates are mandatory for everyone, and you don’t only get patches for Windows 10, but driver updates too.

Although this can be considered a good approach to keep devices secure and always up to date, sometimes updates roll out with bugs or compatibility issues that can cause more harm than good.

For this reason, Windows 10 includes an option to allow users to stop the OS from including driver updates when you update your system using the Local Group Policy editor and Registry.

In this guide, you’ll learn the steps to stop getting driver updates when installing new updates on your computer.

How to prevent Windows Update from installing driver updates using Group Policy

If you’re using Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise or Education, you can use the Local Group Policy editor to stop Windows Update from installing driver updates during the rollout of new quality updates.

To exclude driver updates on Windows 10, do the following:

  1. Open Start.

  2. Search for gpedit.msc and press Enter to open the Local Group Policy Editor.

  3. Browse the following path

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update
  4. Double-click the Do not include drivers with Windows Updates policy.

    Group Policy for Windows Update
  5. Select the Enabled option on the top-left.

Exclude driver updates from Windows Update
  6. Click Apply.

  7. Click OK.

How to prevent Windows Update from installing driver updates using Registry

On Windows 10 Home, you won’t have access to the Local Group Policy editor, but you can stop driver updates using the Registry.

Warning: It’s very important to note that modifying the Windows Registry can cause serious problems if not used properly. It’s assumed you know what you’re doing and you have created a full backup of your system before proceeding.

To exclude driver updates on Windows 10, do the following:

  1. Open Start.

  2. Search for regedit, and click the result to open the Registry.

  3. On the Windows 10 Anniversary Update browse the following path, go through the additional steps, and then continue with step No. 4:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
    1. Right-click the Windows (folder) key, select New, and click on Key.

    2. Name the key WindowsUpdate and press Enter.

    3. Right-click the WindowsUpdate key, select New, and click on DWORD (32-bit) Value.

    4. Name the key ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate and press Enter.

If you’re on the Windows 10 Creators Update, the path is different. You’ll have to use the following path and continue with step No. 4:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX\Settings
  4. Double-click the DWORD ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate.

  5. Change the DWORD value from 0 to 1.

    Exclude driver update Registry setttings
  6. Click OK.

Once you disable the option your computer will no longer get driver updates through the Windows Update service.

Keep in mind that preventing Windows 10 from installing driver updates can also have a negative effect, as outdated drivers can also cause issues in the long run. However, it’s a good option if you prefer to manually install device drivers you download from your PC manufacturer’s support website.

Another scenario where this option can come in handy is when the latest driver update is causing problems, in which case, you can roll back the old driver, and clear this new option in Settings to prevent Windows 10 from re-downloading the update.

Remember that you can also use the Show or hide updates troubleshooter tool to block problematic updates.

Update, March 24, 2017: Originally published in January 2017, updated on March 2017. This guide has been updated with alternative method to block driver updates using Windows Update, because Windows 10 removes the option from the Settings app.

I rarely write reviews, but I wanted to thank you for fixing my laptop. My laptop was recently updated with Microsoft’s Windows 10 Fall Build update (1709). That update broke my HDMI port and with it, my dual monitor support. I NEED two external monitors for my line of work, and I was dead in the water. Your easy to use interface, simple install/update procedure, and efficent process updated 30 missing/outdated drivers and had me up and running in an hour (500 MB of downloads.) THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Thanks again for creating an awesome product. I will certainly recommend you to friends and colleagues for sure!

You probably already know how important software updates are. Just like updating apps and the operating system on a smartphone, updating drivers on a computer is important to ensure that each of its parts is working properly and to its fullest potential. This is especially important for your graphics card, for example, as driver updates tend to significantly improve game performance. Stick with us to see how to check if your drivers need updating.

Checking for Driver Updates on Windows

Windows Update

Starting with Windows 7, Windows really stepped its game up with Windows Update. Not only does it help with updates that get released for the operating systems itself, but it can also help with updating the device drivers.

On Windows 10, this service is enabled by default and can’t be turned off, but you can still check if it skipped an update by doing the following:

  1. Open the Start menu by clicking on the “Start” button.
  2. When the Start menu opens, type “Windows Update.” The search application will appear instead of the Start menu as soon as you start typing.
  3. Open the “Windows Update settings.”
  4. Click the “Check for updates” button and see if user intervention is required.
  5. If Windows Update manages to find new updates, the “Install now” button will appear. Click on it if you wish to install these immediately.

On Windows 7, you can find the Windows Updates application in the Control Panel, which you can access from the Start menu. On Windows versions 8 and 8.1:

  1. Access the Charms menu by moving your cursor all the way to the right end of the screen.
  2. Select “Settings.”
  3. Click on “Change PC settings.”
  4. On Windows 8, find the “Windows Update” tab. On Windows 8.1, look for “Update and recovery,” then make sure “Windows Update” is selected.
  5. Click “Check for updates now” (“Check now” on Windows 8.1).
  6. Choose the updates that you want to install, then click on the “Install” button.

Device Manager

Another good way to see if your device drivers are up to date without having to install third-party software is by using the Device Manager. To find it in Windows versions 8.1, and 10, right-click on the “Start” button and choose “Device Manager.“ You need to right-click the bottom-left corner of the screen on Windows 8 to find Device Manager. On Windows 7, open the Control Panel from the Start menu and find it on the list. Fortunately, the rest of the procedure is exactly the same in all these Windows versions:

  1. Inside the Device Manager, right-click on the device you want to check on.
  2. In the following pop-up menu, click “Update driver.”
  3. A new window will appear. Click “Search automatically for updated driver software” to see if Windows can find a newer driver for your device.

Note: The other option, “Browse my computer for driver software,” isn’t used as much. You can use it if you’ve downloaded a driver installation from the internet, but even then it is easier to install it yourself by running the executable file.
  4. Wait for a while until Windows reports back. If your device drivers are up to date, it’ll just notify you. If not, it will ask you if you want to update the drivers.

If you still have problems with your drivers, e.g. they’re already updated, but you still think they’re not working properly, you can try uninstalling the drivers or rolling back:

  1. Inside of the Device Manager, right-click on the device you want to check on.
  2. In the following pop-up menu, click “Properties.”
  3. A window with device properties will appear, showing the device status as well. Don’t forget to check for any useful information as well.
  4. Go to the “Driver” tab.
  5. Choose what you want to do with the device driver. Try going with “Roll Back Driver” to see if reverting to a previous version helps. If that fails, consider uninstalling the device, but this is an advanced action. There’s a chance that Windows won’t install the required driver automatically, in which case you’ll have to look for it yourself.

Updating Device Drivers on a Mac

Installing device drivers on a Mac is fairly straightforward, as long as Mac isn’t blocking some of the installation files:

  1. Click on the Apple button in the top-left corner. This will open the Apple menu.
  2. In the drop-down menu that follows, choose “App Store…”
  3. Make sure that the “Updates” tab is selected.
  4. You’ll notice the “Update all” and “Update” buttons if there are drivers that need updating. See if you want to update all drivers at once or if you only want to install some of them.
  5. Wait until your computer installs the drivers. You’ll most likely need to reboot your computer for the updates to take effect.

If Mac blocks an installation file, saying that it wasn’t downloaded from the Mac App Store, just click on ”OK,” then do the following:

  1. Click the Apple button in the top-left corner to open the Apple menu.
  2. Choose “System Preferences.”
  3. Select “Security & Privacy.”
  4. In the bottom-left corner of the window that appears, click on the Lock icon.
  5. If you’re prompted to enter your username and password, do that, then click “Unlock.”
  6. Find the message that says that the downloaded application was blocked and click on the “Open Anyway” button that’s located next to it.
  7. Yet another new window will appear, asking if you want to open a program that you’ve downloaded from the internet. Confirm your decision by clicking “Open.”

Take Care of Your Software

There are many reported cases of updating drivers being both good and bad for a particular computer, so it’s ultimately up to you if you want to do this. However, it’s the most common recommended course of action if you face issues with both hardware and software, so keep that in mind.

What’s your take on updating drivers and your operating system? Would you recommend others to keep them in check? Why? Why not? Let us know in the comment section below.

What hardware device drivers should be updated?

Updated: 06/02/2020 by Computer Hope

Driver CD

Below is a listing of our recommended hardware devices to update. Updating your computer's drivers and other updates can resolve problems, improve the performance, and increase the stability of your computer.

BIOS updates

Computer BIOS updates should only be done when you are having compatibility issues with your hardware, or you feel your computer hardware is not performing as it should. Visiting your computer manufacturer or motherboard manufacturer page allows you to see if any BIOS updates are available for your motherboard and what they fix.

CD or DVD drive drivers and firmware

Updating the drivers for your optical drive (CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, DVD) may improve its performance. We recommend you visit our CD drivers page for a listing of manufacturers and their driver update pages to obtain the latest drivers.

Some manufacturers may also have firmware updates available for their CD drives. Firmware updates resolve hardware related issues you may be experiencing with the CD drive, such as being unable to read some CDs or may update the region code on your DVD drive. Unlike a driver update, these updates should only be performed for users who are experiencing hardware related issues with their drives. Most firmware updates are accessible through the manufacturer's CD driver page, see the CD drivers page for a listing of these links.

Controllers

Updating to the latest drivers for your computer controllers help with their reliability and the drives connected to them. If you're using a device separate from your computer motherboard, see the controller drivers page for a listing of manufacturers and drivers. If you are not using a separate component, the controller card may be updated by installing the latest drivers for your motherboard. These drivers can be obtained from your motherboard or OEM computer manufacturer. See the motherboard drivers page for additional information.

Drivers are an essential part of every Windows ecosystem. Without these invisible software packages, you basically can’t run your hardware as intended.

Thus, keeping them up to date is of essential value for all Windows users, both home users, and professionals.

Every piece of hardware requires a proper driver to work correctly because drivers are the soul of every computer.

If a particular component of your computer is missing or has an outdated driver, various problems may occur.

For example, if your graphics card is missing a driver, you’ll have display problems, if your sound card is missing a driver, you won’t hear any sound on your computer, and so on.

Keeping all your drivers up to date is essential for your computer to work properly. But in Windows 10, keeping your drivers updated is slightly harder than it used to be in previous versions of the OS.

You probably know that Microsoft imagined Windows 10 as a service. This means we won’t get a new version of Windows in the future, but just bigger updates for the current version.

The problem with these updates is that some of them can make your drivers outdated or even incompatible.

In that manner, it is highly recommended to check all your drivers after installing a major update for Windows 10.

Because, as we said, if an update makes your drivers outdated or incompatible, you may face some major problems.

There are a couple of ways to check for drivers update, and each method is quite simple. So, if you still haven’t, do your computer a favor, and update all your drivers to the latest versions.

How can I update drivers in Windows 10?

1. Update drivers through Windows Update

Microsoft has some sort of partnership with bigger hardware manufacturers like Intel, Nvidia, AMD, etc. Therefore, these companies regularly release driver updates for their components via Windows Update.

So, if you’re rocking a newer NVidia or ATI graphics card, all you need to do to keep your drivers up to date is to regularly check for Windows updates.

windows-10-update-drivers

You probably already know how to check for updates in Windows 10, but it won’t hurt if we remind you once again.

To check for updates, go to the Settings app, select Updates & security, and just click on Check for updates.

Expert Tip: Some PC issues are hard to tackle, especially when it comes to corrupted repositories or missing Windows files. If you are having troubles fixing an error, your system may be partially broken. We recommend installing Restoro, a tool that will scan your machine and identify what the fault is.
Click here to download and start repairing.

This way, you’ll keep all your drivers updated, and install all the other Windows 10 updates available too.

2. Use Device Manager to manually update your drivers

  1. Go to Search, type devicemng, and open Device Manager.
  2. You’ll now see the list of all your hardware listed in Device Manager.
  3. To check for driver updates for any component, just right-click on it, and choose to Update driver.
  4. Now, you will have two choices. You can select the first one if you want the system to automatically search for a driver. The second is for when you already downloaded a driver and so you will have to point its location.
  5. If a driver update is available, the wizard will automatically install it, if not, your driver is already up to date.

As we said, this is the most popular manual method of checking for driver updates in Windows 10.

In case you don’t receive your driver updates via Windows Update, the most common way to check for driver updates is with the Device Manager.

It might take some time to check every single driver manually, but you can solve a lot of problems by doing that. To check for driver updates in Device Manager, do as described above.

3. Install dedicated driver downloading software

There are various third-party tools that you can use to automatically install the latest drivers on your Windows 10 computer. A professional driver updater software is one of the most efficient options to take into consideration.

You need to know from the start that a professional tool makes updating drivers simple even for newbies. More precisely, the tool runs automatically to find outdated drivers.

Some of the most common Windows errors and bugs are a result of old or incompatible drivers. The lack of an up-to-date system can lead to lag, system errors or even BSoDs.To avoid these types of problems, you can use an automatic tool that will find, download, and install the right driver version on your Windows PC in just a couple of clicks, and we strongly recommend DriverFix. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Download and install DriverFix.
  2. Launch the application.
  3. Wait for DriverFix to detect all your faulty drivers.
  4. The software will now show you all the drivers that have issues, and you just need to select the ones you’d liked fixed.
  5. Wait for DriverFix to download and install the newest drivers.
  6. Restart your PC for the changes to take effect.

4. Update your drivers from the manufacturer’s website

Microsoft already has agreements with all the important manufacturers and provides the necessary drivers within regular Windows updates.

However, in some special cases, some manufacturers can release special updates to tweak certain problems. They will also end up as updates for your PC, but you can be faster.

That’s why, in some cases, visiting the manufacturer’s website and checking their Support page (usually) to get the latest drivers for your computer may be a very good decision.

Here are the official driver download links for the most common drivers used on Windows PCs:

5. Use the Compatibility Mode

  1. Locate the driver installation program on your computer or on a media (CD/DVD).
  2. Right-click on the setup file of the program (it is an executable file that usually has the word setup in its name).
  3. Select Troubleshoot compatibility.
  4. The Program Compatibility Troubleshooter will look for any problems.
  5. Click on Troubleshoot program.
  6. Now select which is the problem with the program. In this case, if the driver worked fine in a previous version select the first option and click on Next.
  7. Choose the Windows version in which the driver worked fine and then click on Next. We selected Windows 7 in our example.
  8. Now click on Test the program and then hit Next again.
  9. Now just follow the instructions to install the drivers as you would normally do.
  10. Finally, if the installation worked and the drivers work fine, you can save these settings.

We have some guys at work who try to point out to  my boss how neglectful I am in managing the staff PCs because Windows updates allows them to be updated. These two guys will go on about "bad things happen" if you let Windows update them but they never have any kind of concrete reasons or examples.

This did get me thinking though if there is a best practice in regards to letting windows update them or disabling driver updates. What are your thoughts on this? Would love to see what the majority think about it.

In our case it is, if it ain't broke don't fix it.  We only update drivers if something fails to work.  Ex new cad software requires updated video drivers.

The only updates we push out through WSUS is security.  and that is only after we have run them on a sample set of workstations

For the most part, the process is to approve updates in WSUS, push them out to a test OU, and observe for negative effects before applying on whole domain.

Edit: As an example, look at Meltdown, Spectre patches. Look at the one from last week that broke NICs in WS 2008 and WS 2008 R2. I experience this first hand and confirmed my suspicions after reading a similar thread on Spiceworks.

There isn’t anything really wrong with letting windows update drivers, it’s often not enabled because you should test before deploying and with drivers allowed its more you should be testing.

As said, if it hasn’t caused a problem then where is the problem?

Best practice doesn’t mean “The only way to do it”.  Keeping the drivers updates can be of benefit as well as a liability.

For those bitching I ask;  What problems has it caused?  When they respond “none yet, but it could.”. Stop them as they speak and respond with “ it could also be fixes issues that we don’t know of”

There is nothing wrong using MS drivers (or updates) until something does goes wrong.about 10% of the time.

.

For example.wireless software on lappy.would you use the Intel wireless application or Windows to manage your wireless ? Basically, the wireless adapter requires firmware (BIOS level) then drivers (Windows OSe) then Windows software then an optional Intel application (some people skip this).

So when you update firmware and or drivers, Windows usually accepts it.but the Intel application may not, or you may also have to download and install the new version of Intel application.

.

For some reason, if the MS drivers cause an issue to the hardware, would you use the drivers from the part manufacturer (Intel) or lappy maker (Dell or HP)  which may be an older version ? I would usually assume the lappy makers (like Dell or HP) would test the manufacturer drivers with supplied OSe and other components (mobo, RAM etc) before repackaging and putting the "certified" version to their websites.

I prefer not using MS drivers because they are generic to the chipset of the device. Video cards are the best example. A lot of cards use the same chip, but every manufacturer adds something to the card. Will the MS generic driver work? Sure. Is it optimum for that card? likely not.

I also view drivers and BIOS updates very much in the if it ain't broke, don't fix it category.

I have a test machine that I run each update on first, if it works on there I push it to our POS machines, then Managers, then Corporate. All with a week in between each.

It's also worth noting that it's easy to install a tool to undo updates drivers update. We have a few managers who use the same logic as your Tweedledee and  Tweedledum, but I always counter with the fact that Managers have Rollback Rx on the machines so I can undo an update in 5 seconds if I need to.

Not to say you need that, might be good to have as a bit of an assurance for your users but general idea is to reassure and if they don't listen or care, find someone who does but that's getting more into HR.

I've always adhered to this same idea, only update drivers when needed (when something isn't working). That being said, I don't recall ever seeing Windows driver updates breaking something.

I've found with Windows 10, often the Windows Update drivers are pretty current and are from the manufacturer.  On a new Windows 10 build, I often try to install the latest drivers from the OEM's website and am told the drivers already installed are newer.

That said, I'm another one on the team of not updating drivers and firmware unless I think it's going to fix a specific problem.

Driver updates are going to be fine on standard hardware that uses the standard drivers provided by the hardware component manufacturers. For example, Adobe CC 2017 Applications NUCs use standard drivers for all components. ASUS motherboards also use standard drivers (not sure about their AMD-based boards though).

But if you have a Dell, HP, etc. maybe the drivers aren't  standard because the hardware isn't standard, or because they did something else that is non-standard. In that case, you are a bit more likely to have a problem. Some brand names use standard drivers, others like to "differentiate" themselves. I believe in the KISS principles, in this case: Keep It Standard Stupid.

By avoiding non-standard stuff, I can't even remember the last time I saw a driver update break anything. The driver updates available through MS Windows Update (supposedly) are put through additional testing. The drivers available through Windows Update are often NOT the latest drivers. They are the latest drivers provided by the component manufacturer that MS has certified for your version of Windows.

Although Intel provides RST drivers for their storage controllers, the MS provided drivers work fine, and you are unlikely to see any noticeable difference in performance.

Display drivers

Unlike other hardware devices, display devices such as a computer monitor or flat-panel displays are often automatically detected and set up by the operating system.

If you are looking for a video driver, see the below video card drivers section.

Keyboard drivers

Unless your computer keyboard contains special keys, your keyboard should not require any drivers and should be set up by the operating system.

Note

Users using a USB or FireWire keyboard may need drivers for their operating system to support the keyboard.

Mouse drivers

Unless you are utilizing a unique mouse with special buttons, wheels, or other features, drivers are not required. The mouse should automatically set up by the operating system.

Modem drivers

Updating the computer modem drivers can improve the reliability of the modem and may improve the speed. We recommend you visit our modem drivers page for a listing of manufacturers and their driver update pages to obtain the latest drivers.

Some modem manufacturers may also have firmware updates that upgrade the modem to support new standards, such as V.90, or correct hardware issues with the modem. Firmware updates should only be done if your computer or modem manufacturer recommends you update the modem or if you believe a firmware update corrects your issue. When updating your modem's firmware, verify you are using a firmware update designed for your modem. Updating the firmware with an incorrect version may cause the modem to no longer work. Firmware updates are usually also available through the modem drivers page.

Motherboard drivers, firmware, and updates

Updating the computer motherboard or motherboard chipset drivers helps with compatibility, reliability, and performance. It can also be beneficial to other hardware installed in the computer. See the motherboard drivers page for a listing of links to motherboard chipset drivers and motherboard manufacturers' drivers pages.

Network card drivers

Updating or installing the latest drivers for a computer network card may help with the reliability of the network card in the computer. For a listing of computer network card drivers, see our network drivers index.

Some network card manufacturers may also have firmware updates that resolve compatibility issues or other hardware issues. These updates should only be done if your network card or computer manufacturer recommends an update. These updates are also available through the manufacturer's network drivers page.

Printer drivers

Updating or installing the latest drivers for a computer printer may help with the reliability and compatibility of the printer. A listing of computer printer drivers is on our printer drivers page.

Removable media drivers

Updating or installing the latest drivers for a removable media device, such as a tape drive, may help with the reliability of the removable media device. A listing of computer removable media drivers is on our removable media or tape drive drivers page.

Scanner drivers

Updating or installing the latest drivers for a scanner may help with the reliability and compatibility of the scanner. A listing of computer scanner drivers is on our scanner drivers page.

Sound card Video Editor - Crack All Windows/Mac OS Software Full Version or installing the latest drivers for a sound card help with the compatibility, reliability, and the performance of the sound card. A listing of computer sound card drivers is on our sound card drivers page.

Video drivers

Updating or installing the latest drivers for a video card help with compatibility, reliability, and the performance of the video card. A listing of computer video card drivers is on our video card drivers page.

Some video card manufacturers may also have firmware updates. Firmware updates may resolve issues relating to the compatibility of the video card or resolve other hardware issues. Firmware updates should only be done if your video card or computer manufacturer recommends an updates drivers. These updates are also available through the manufacturer's network drivers page.

Important: You don’t have to pay for driver updates!

Several people have messaged me recently asking about “driver update notices” that are popping up on their computers.

These messages are usually presented in pop-up windows or messages in the notifications area at the bottom-right corner of the screen.

Regardless of how these messages show up, the vast majority of them are scams.

These notices typically say your computer’s hardware drivers are out of date, which could lead to serious problems unless they are updated.

The scammer then updates drivers you to pay a fee in order to either download and install the updated driver(s) from their website or install and/or activate a “driver update” program that will update the driver(s) for you.

While it’s true that on rare occasions a hardware driver might possibly need to be updated to keep your system operating as it should, those rare necessary updates are completely free.

Truth be told, there’s a great chance that your machine will keep working just fine throughout its useful life without you ever having to install a single driver update.

What’s more, driver updates can occasionally go bad and cause problems with the system

And even worse, the “drivers” installed by some “driver update” programs are actually malware that can give the scammer a back door into your system.

Therefore, I don’t  recommend installing driver updates unless you have a real and specific need to do so.

I do recommend that you ignore any and all offers to install a driver or a driver update program from a third-party website.

As usually happens when I post about this topic, I’ll soon start receiving a bunch of emails from folks telling me they’ve been using “Driver Update Program X” for years with no issues. And truth be told, there are a few legitimate driver update programs out there.

However, I don’t recommend any of them, for two reasons:

1 – You don’t need them.

2 – If you choose the wrong one you’ll end up with malware on your PC and a scammer who has access to your files and sensitive information.

So how should you handle driver updates? Well, like I said above, you don’t have to deal with them at all unless a need to do so arises.

If your computer does start having driver-related issues with a particular piece of hardware (the video adapter or network adapter for instance), you can simply check the support section of the manufacturer’s website to updates drivers sure you have the latest driver for that piece of hardware installed.

And now, one more reminder…

While there are a few legitimate programs you can install that will monitor your machine’s hardware drivers and alert you when an update is available for one or more of them, the vast majority of those programs are nothing more than scams.

The truth is you don’t need those programs.

If your machine is running Windows 10 or Windows 11 you’ll probably never even need to be concerned about driver updates because Microsoft has configured those versions of Windows to either automatically install driver updates as needed or let you know when updates drivers are available via the Windows Update process.

Bottom line: You should never have to pay to update your computer’s hardware drivers or install a program to do it for you. If a new version of a driver exists, you can simply download it from the manufacturer’s website and install it for free – or even better, Windows will do it for you.

The Windows 10 update mistake you’re probably making

Technology is constantly evolving, and there is a good chance that the computer you bought six months ago has already needed updates several times. Windows computers need to be updated regularly to work properly. Tap or click here to find out how to update Windows the right way.

You aren’t alone if you are reading this and wondering what drivers are. In simple terms, a driver is just software that communicates with your computer, allowing it to operate properly. The bottom line, your drivers are important.

If you’re set up for Windows 10 automatic updates, your drivers should be automatically kept up to date. There are some situations, though, when you’ll want to update your drivers manually. This tip is brought to you by Dell.

When should you manually update your drivers?

Since your drivers should update automatically with software updates and updating manually isn’t easy, this should be a last-case resort. In most cases, technical issues on your computer can be related to outdated drivers. If you are experiencing any of the following issues, you may want to update manually:

  • Your mouse isn’t detected
  • Monitor display issues
  • An improperly-working webcam

Before doing it manually, try double checking your updates

When it comes to messing around with the software on your computer, the less you do, the better. Ever mess around with your favorite cake recipe and end up with a hockey puck instead of a cake? Mistakes happen, especially when you attempt to be a computer expert, so try the automatic update first.

How to check for updates:

  • Tap the Start menu button in the bottom left corner of your screen
  • Select Settings
  • Choose Update and Security
  • Tap Check for Updates

If there is an update available, select Download and install.

Manually updating your drivers

If the automatic update doesn’t work, it’s time to update your drivers yourself manually. You’ll have to update each category one by one manually. Here’s how:

  • Head to the search box on your taskbar
  • Type device manager
  • Select Device Manager
  • Choose a device and right-click (For example: If you’re having problems with your monitor, select monitor and right-click it)
  • Tap Update driver
  • Choose Search automatically for drivers
  • If a driver update is available, update it (Note: If it already has the most recent driver, you’ll see a message that says, “The updates drivers drivers for your device are already installed”)

Not everyone is a technology whiz, but with these easy steps, you should be able to manually update your Windows 10 drivers. Experiencing other problems with Windows? Tap or click here for seven tools to help fix frustrating Windows problems.

Total av crack free download - Crack Key For U going with “Roll Back Driver” to see if reverting to a previous version helps.

There are many reported cases of updating drivers being both good and bad updates drivers a particular computer, so it’s ultimately up to you if you want to do this. However, it’s the most common recommended course of action if you face issues with both hardware and software, so keep that in mind.

What’s your take on updating drivers and your operating system? Would you recommend others to keep them in check? Why? Why not? Let us know in the comment section below.
